a night like this ( just for tonight).
A night like this one... when Ser Duncan the Tall and Aerion Targaryen are nothing more than the parents of a little baby named Maegor, leaving all their titles behind and stealing a small moment of normalcy in the midst of so many duties and names.
Just for one night, Duncan the Tall can hold his son in his arms with his omega beside him.
Just for one night, he can be himself and have his family at his side.
The cold from the Red Keep seeped into the corridors, settling deep into the stone; it was a quiet night, silent enough that it felt as though the entire castle had surrendered to sleep. For Duncan the Tall, however, it was his turn to stand watch outside Prince Aerion Targaryen's chambers, a duty he had carried for many moons with quiet pride and unwavering devotion. So much had changed that there were moments when he still struggled to believe any of it had truly happened; he wore the white cloak now, his name was sung in taverns from one village to the next, and men recognized him before he spoke. Yet none of that filled his chest quite like standing before this door, guarding the two souls behind it. From a distance, he guarded a chubby infant and his mother, and his eyes always softened whenever they landed on either of them. He was not merely protecting a prince and his heir; he was protecting his omega, his son.
Maegor Targaryen had never been expected, his arrival having caught everyone by surprise. Maegor had been light breaking through darkness, something Duncan had admired from afar—something he had protected from afar. Whenever he stood guard outside Aerion's chambers, he barely moved, his posture never faltering and his hand resting near the pommel of his sword, ready for anything if it meant keeping them safe. Dawn would come eventually; he would steal a few hours of sleep, then return to watching over his family from the shadow loss once more. But tonight felt different.
The wooden door opened without warning. Aerion leaned into the corridor, violet eyes sweeping both directions before settling on Duncan; without hesitation, he strode forward, seized Duncan's forearm with surprising strength, and tugged.
"Inside, giant," the omega ordered. "Now."
Duncan planted his feet. "I can't." His gaze remained fixed somewhere over Aerion's shoulder instead of on the prince himself, who wore nothing but a crimson silk robe threaded with gold. "You know I can't leave this door, my prince."
Aerion let out an impatient huff. "Inside. Now, giant." His fingers tightened around Duncan's arm. "Maegor is asking for you." A sly smile tugged at his lips. "Or is the famous Ser Duncan truly going to deny a baby?"
