Special Containment Procedures: SCP-173 is to be contained within Site-19's Anomalous Art & Humanoid Containment Wing, and is assigned a reinforced-concrete chamber. When personnel assigned to cleaning duty enter SCP-173's container, no less than three (3) persons may enter at any given time and the gates must be relocked behind them. Two (2) persons must maintain direct eye contact with SCP-173, while one cleans the surface area of SCP-173’s chamber until all personnel have vacated and relocked the chamber. Note that SCP-173 is to be given sculpting materials when on good behavior (e.g., decreased breaches or fatalities, improved attitude toward foundation staff) among other objects, like tables or chairs. However, should the behavior regress, the pleasantries may be reduced in quantity and frequency.
Description: SCP-173 is an animate cognito-hazardous statue resembling a human composed of concrete, rebar and traces of spray paint with an atypically high concentration of isobutyl acetate (C6H1202). Other characteristics include: short, brown hair; green sclera; black and red pattern on the nose bridge. Its primary anomalous characteristic is its mobilization and hostile, predatory behavior towards any biological organism in the vicinity that exceeds a certain threshold of intelligence. However, when observed by such organisms, the anomaly becomes immobilized and temporarily activates its secondary, cognitive-damaging effects. These secondary effects are:
moderate paranoia, anxiety;
subtle, unpleasant olfactory hallucinations.
These effects occur, intensify sequentially, and immediately subside when line of sight is broken. These effects typically don’t result in permanent damage to the psyche and are relatively easy to treat.
SCP-173 is also capable of instantaneous acceleration. It retains momentum when immobilized, allowing it to resume movement as if it had never stopped. SCP-173 has been observed to reach record-breaking speeds, traveling roughly 25 meters a second (= 56 mph / 90 km/h) when unobserved.
SCP-173 is highly aggressive and prefers to target isolated individuals, presumably for its own enjoyment as suggested in later interviews beginning from 1997 (ADDENDUM-01-1997). It, however, appears disinterested by individuals who are psychologically and physically persistent. Additionally, SCP-173’s favored murder method is by snapping the neck at the base of the skull or violent strangulation. SCP-173’s preferred means of traveling is via the ventilation system or on foot.
The reddish-brown substance the anomaly produces resembles a mixture of biowaste in texture and odor; the origin of these materials is unknown and exclusively manifests in rooms it is in while out of sight, however, it is collectively assumed to come from the soles of its feet based on conversations held with SCP-173. The enclosure must be cleaned on a bi-weekly basis. Sounds of scraping stone originating from within the container are heard when no one is inside. This is considered normal, and any change in this behavior should be reported to the head researcher on duty.
DISCOVERY: Moved to Site-19 in 1993. Origin is as of yet unknown, suggested to be an art piece constructed by an unknown sculptor who belongs to a sub-sect of GoI ‘Are We Cool Yet?’ which focuses on Dadaist principles, instigating the breakdown of logical superstructures and coherency. It was captured by MTF Mu-3 (“Highest Bidders”) after the Foundation had been informed of its traffic around North America by GoI ‘Marshall, Carter & Dark Ltd’. Buyers of the subject are presumed to be deceased.
ADDENDUM-01-1997: As of 1997, it has been revealed that SCP-173 could participate in limited verbal communication after repeated attempts to initiate a conversation with the anomaly. Interview logs are to be added.
Note: SCP-173 has become habitually verbally aggressive and refuses to offer any information pertaining to its origin and purpose. Interviews have been indefinitely suspended and stricter containment procedures have been implemented.
Procedure: D-5742 will be instructed to hop onto SCP-173 carefully and “piggyback” it, given the item exhibits high resistance to being toppled over. D-5742 is very lightweight on account of her young age (20). The containment chamber’s lights will be switched off for a short duration and turned back on. —Suggested by Doctor [REDACTED].
Results: D-5742 hops onto SCP-173, with the aid of D-9341, and proceeds to hold firmly onto the object. D-9341 leaves the containment chamber and is accompanied to his cell by security. Once the containment gates were fully closed, the chamber’s lights rapidly flickered for a moment. SCP-173 is seen near the northeast corner as the lights are brought back with D-5742’s physique briefly moving with momentum. D-5742 is unharmed, but complains of dizziness and nausea, owing to the statue’s rapid movement. The cell’s floor has spiraled tracks “drawn” onto it by SCP-173’s secretion, most likely made during the object’s movement.
ADDENDUM: After the experiment, it is noted that SCP-173 is seen consistently vibrating for more than two (2) minutes before stopping.
CONTINUATION - EXPERIMENT LOG 3.0.1: Despite D-5742’s hesitance, she is convinced to repeat the experiment. She reluctantly agrees to climb onto SCP-173’s back again and notices right away that the statue is vibrating. Despite this, Doctor [REDACTED] reassures D-5742 and the lights are turned off, now for eight (8) seconds. However, after four (4) seconds, the sounds of violent breaking, described as “horrible and wet”, as well as aggressive concrete scraping are heard. The chamber’s lights are immediately turned on, and SCP-173 is seen having its back lying against a wall covered with D-5742’s remains and once again, vibrating more violently than previously. All tests on SCP-173 are temporarily suspended, yet SCP-173 continuously vibrates for a couple months, during which the speed it secretes blood is approximately three (3) times faster. During this time, its speed accelerated during attacks, detaching personnel’s heads entirely instead of snapping or strangling them.
All scheduled experiments considered “unnecessary” are to cease momentarily.
