Kai Ono, Piano Performance and Music Composition ‘17

Hometown: Irvine, CA

Kai Ono shared the Rosalyn Tureck (First) Prize at the Fourth International Rosalyn Tureck International Bach Competition in New York City Oct. 15-18, for his performance of Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue (category 6).

“As a member of the KU Jazz Ensemble I and KU Wind Ensemble, I've had the opportunity to play some of the newest written music in both the classical and the jazz world. Both groups are nationally renowned, providing incredible performance and recording opportunities.”

“My dream after I graduate is to become a composer-pianist. I don't necessarily have to always play my own works, and my works don't necessarily have to be limited to the classical piano medium - I suppose this composer-pianist label is more to say that I hope to spend many of my days composing and performing in the future.”

“One of my favorite things about KU School of Music is the beautiful courtyard at the center of the building. After the chaos of practice, classes, rehearsals, and work, I seem to continually end up sitting on the stairs in the courtyard looking up at the night sky with Murphy Hall surrounding me. I find it to be powerfully representative of the warm community that the School of Music offers its students, faculty, and staff.”

“All of the faculty have passion for music and are excited about the particular facet of music that they teach. The environment is both supportive and serious. A lot of other schools have a competitive atmosphere, but the KU community is very encouraging. In the violin studio, I don't feel like I'm ever trying to compete against my peers, but that we are all a team competing against who we were as musicians the day before. Finally, I chose KU because it was affordable. College can get quite expensive these days, and KU was able to provide the financial support to make studying music a possibility.”

“My experience in the jazz program has been phenomenal! I've had the opportunity to work with world renowned guest artists, Kansas City musicians, and tour Europe since my time in the jazz program. In addition to all of these, winning the DownBeat award for best large jazz ensemble is the icing on the cake. I have played lead trumpet in Jazz Ensemble I for the past two years and am extremely excited to see where the next two years will take the band.”

“After completing my degree at KU, I plan on going to graduate school for a master's degree in trumpet performance. After this, my long term musical goals include a mixture of playing and teaching, either in the public school system or at a college. I love playing all genres of music, so I hope to continue playing a wide variety of jazz and classical music in the future.”

“The KU School of Music provides a small school atmosphere on a large school campus. It’s nice to be in a building with so many familiar faces, but to still have the opportunities and resources that a larger school can provide.”

“This summer (2015), I spent 6 weeks studying abroad with 11 other music therapy students in Thailand. While abroad, we provided clinical services to clients and attended classes with Thai music therapy students during the week, and traveled during the weekend. There was so much to learn from Thai culture, and it was extremely moving to watch the other students grow and develop within their clinical work throughout the time. I think we all really benefited from the language barrier, because it allowed us to really focus on how exactly the music was facilitating a change in the clients we were working with. The trip has impacted my life both personally and professionally, and I am incredibly grateful to have been provided the opportunity to study abroad through KU!”

“Since my freshman year, I have been in 4 different choirs, each with a different focus. My knowledge of different techniques and musical styles has grown throughout each semester. It is interesting to transition from a young member in Chamber Choir to a leader in the Symphonic Combined Choir.”

“My two favorite things about the KU School of Music are the opportunities that students have and the atmosphere that is cultivated. The school is small enough that students have a chance to be incredibly involved from the start and can find chances to be in chamber music, large ensembles, clubs, professional organizations, and other groups. However, it is large enough that students can still work and perform with incredibly talented and successful musicians. Very few schools offer that combination of immediate opportunities and high performance standards.”

“The Music Education program at KU is second to none. It has world-class faculty at every position, all extraordinarily committed to the success of their students. It also has a unique approach to teacher preparation that gives students an enormous amount of hands-on experience, both in the classroom and in the public schools, that make our graduates better equipped to be successful immediately in the real world. “The KU faculty is extremely personable and genuinely invested in each of their students. Several KU faculty went above and beyond the call of duty for me in order to give me opportunities and enable me to explore my interests. They encouraged me to become a diverse musician and provided me with outlets in order to grow and learn. In my tenure at KU, I took independent studies with professors, wrote drill for the marching band, directed several ensembles, and took lessons on three instruments. These experiences gave me the skill set that I needed in order to get my job.”
