Feel free to reblog for other people to vote. DO NOT SEND HATE TO ANYONE FOR WHAT THEY VOTED. This is merely for fun and to see what people genuinely think.
used to think it terribly silly (and kinda funny) when fantasy or sci-fi stories would have people refer to major recent historical events as The Flood or The Incident or The Revolution, and im sure historians fucking hate that because it's not helpful or descriptive, but we sure do be calling it The Pandemic
Lots of writing advice on tumblr. It's been years since I've written fiction in a serious way, but I did write a couple of (bad) novels in my early 20's, a bunch of short stories, and also a few hundred thousand words of LARP writing, and I do have a bacherlor's of science in creative writing (lol).
From what I can tell, there are only three universally applicable pieces of writing advice:
Read a lot (mandatory)
Show your writing to people (mandatory)
Have something wrong with you in a way that is impossible to articulate except by writing a novel (optional)

hello there!! i'm someone who admittedly did not take care of their teeth at all for a large part of their life and are reaping the consequences. i don't have pain in any teeth, nor sensitivity where the cavities i see are located, but almost every surface has a pretty visible cavity or multiple, save for the front bottom teeth and my canines. i doubt it's just staining because of how long i've gone without doing anything to care for them. as of the past three weeks ive been brushing twice every day, waiting before rinsing, etc and trying my best to floss—and i have a dentist's appointment booked
but i still can't shake the fear that it's too late. i feel like with my negligence i've doomed myself to losing all my teeth as i get older no matter what... the saying goes that fillings eventually turn into root canals/crowns which turn into implants or dentures—and i'm terrified of getting a root canal and having my teeth shaved down for a crown... i'm even just terrified of getting fillings, because its inevitable that every time you have to replace them, more and more natural structure gets removed. the thought that no matter what i do now, ive surely doomed my teeth already due to youthful neglect and can only prolong the inevitable, is really saddening. do you think my concerns are founded? or am i being too negative?
ask received 1/23
anon, i am so glad to hear that you're building healthy homecare habits and that you have an appointment booked!! i'm sure by now you've already had the visit, and i hope it went well, but i'm still going to answer the rest of this ask because i think a lot of people need to hear it.
it is never too late.
it might feel that way when there's visible decay and buildup you can't scrape off. it might feel that way when finances are tight and you're overwhelmed with the restorative work. but i promise you from the bottom of my heart that it is never too late to turn things around.
you're right that a restored tooth is not as strong as a healthy natural tooth. but, at the same time, a restored tooth is much, much stronger than a natural tooth with active decay. a tooth that's been restored with a filling might need a crown or root canal someday, but it also might hold strong for a very long time; we have patients in my practice that have fillings in their mouth they got the 70s!
the lifespan of a restoration depends on a lot of factors, but the biggest one by far is homecare. the #1 reason a restoration needs to be replaced is recurrent caries, aka a cavity that forms around or underneath the restoration. remember that a filling or crown only treats the existing cavity; it doesn't prevent cavities from forming ever again in the same area. it's still important to brush and floss regularly to prevent decay.
now is a great time to start building up those habits you've been working on, so that once your teeth have been restored to a healthy state, you can rely on that routine to keep them in the best shape possible!!
i want to highlight too, though, that if a restoration needs to be replaced, it's nothing to beat yourself up over. as i said before, lots of factors go into a restoration's lifespan: genetic predisposition for cavities, the size and location of it, quality of work, your bite, your jaw positioning, all of that can affect whether you need restorations in the first place and whether they ever need to replaced. my dentist often recommends occlusal guards to anyone with more than a handful of restorations in their mouth, because it protects them (+ your natural teeth of course!) from a lot of wear and tear from grinding and clenching at night.
so, all this to say, please don't give up just as you're getting going!! your teeth and their shiny new restorations can serve you for years to come!!

Hot take, but even if you ARE punching up (instead of punching sideways at a group that is in the same boat as you), there's a limit to what you can say without sounding like a violent facist but woke this time.
Making fun of a group of people that are privileged over you is one thing, but wishing non-cartoonish violence and death on them ("they should fall off a cliff" vs. "they should be wiped out"), wishing sexual violence on them, dehumanising them, claiming that they're less capable of creating art or living meaningful lives, saying that their relationships are inherently shallow and fake - these things are fucked up. I understand venting and saying extreme things when in pain, but when you find yourself regularly posting about wanting certain people tortured and killed, you need to examine that.
When the only thing stopping you from completely dehumanising someone is your own judgement regarding their privilege level relative to yours, you are not a safe person to be around.
"convince your followers that their Oppressor Class (whether real or imagined) is less deserving of human rights" is the oldest and most reliable trick in the book to incite mass violence, and you're not immune to it because you're a Good Person with Correct Opinions. you will continue to be a potential breeding ground for fascist thought until you stop dehumanizing people in any context, regardless of whether they deserve it or not, or how serious you are. there can be no acceptable targets.
In the spring of 1994, the small African nation of Rwanda was engulfed in a maelstrom of violence that saw at least 800,000 Tutsi and modera
I always think of the Rwandan Genocide when it comes to this. Thank you for bringing it up.
In particular, from that second link:
As we have already seen in this series of articles, Rwanda’s ethnic division between Hutu (around 85 %) and Tutsi (around 14 %) had deep roots in colonial rule. Under Belgian administration, identity cards fixed ethnicity as a rigid category, and the Tutsi minority was favoured for education and government work. After independence in 1962, this hierarchy inverted, and Hutu elites consolidated control. [...]
When RTLM launched in July 1993, it combined pop-culture style with extremist ideology. This hybrid made hatred sound normal, even entertaining. Music, jokes, gossip, and death threats co-existed in the same broadcast. [...]
RTLM’s language fused entertainment with ideology. It mocked Tutsis as arrogant “cockroaches” (inyenzi), accused them of conspiring to enslave Hutus, and encouraged listeners to “work” to eliminate them—a euphemism for killing. Humour, music, and familiarity disguised the lethal message.
“Anything goes as long as it’s punching up” is also the central tenet of antisemitism. Leftists think Jews are the ultrawhite ruling class, worst of the worst of whiteness, and conservatives think we’re a race secretly controlling the world and pretending to be white as a plot to bring down the white race. People who believe the latter are in charge of the US government rn. The nature of antisemitism is that we serve as a misdirect for the people with real power. Whatever issues you care about, people in power will find a way to blame the Jews. I cannot remember the exact quote or who it’s from, but I will paraphrase it anyways. Depending on who you ask we’re communists, capitalists, nationalists, rootless cosmopolitans, white, least white, liberals, conservatives, fascists, anarchists, or whatever other “existential and powerful” threat one may believe exists. But what we never are to these people is human. We’re the monsters who hurt them and so it’s okay to hurt us. The truth doesn’t matter, of course, because they aren’t actually afraid of us. We’re just a safer and easier target, and the lie that hurting us is dangerous and makes a change is easier than the hard truths and dangers one must face to fight real power. As Jean-Paul Sartre said, “If the Jew did not exist, the antisemite would invent him.” Because it is not about the truth, but having a comforting lie that you can make positive change through abusing the vulnerable.

This is a reminder for those who handmake Christmas presents that now is not too early to start. It may in fact be a good time to start if you have a lot to make/your craft takes a long time. You should maybe start it now, whether that's brainstorming or actually doing the crafts!
Spin the wheel again. That’s who’s trying to protect you.
(If you have zero idea about a name you got, spin until you see someone you recognize.)
Are you safe?
Absolutely not. I'm dead. 100% dead.
I might stay alive, but it'll be a really close thing.
I'll take some hits, for certain, but I should be okay in the end.
A few attacks might get through, but nothing concerning.
The attacker might be able to get in one lucky hit. If that.
I am the opposite of worried. I'm 100% safe.
…Look. I've tried picturing this. But I honestly don't know how to answer.
Remaining time: 5 days 14 hours
(I've run this poll twice before, expanding it significantly for the second run. With about a year passed since that second run, I thought it was time to add another couple hundred names to the list and have another go.)
