This is an old playlist I chose to extract and share for komasa week because apparently I enjoy pain and maybe someone else enjoys it too. All songs are picked foremost because I felt their lyrics and overall mood fit, but I’m not going to copy+paste the entire lyrics here, this post is long enough as it is. Instead I’ll highlight particular lines or verses I feel contribute to the arching theme, which is that Kojuro is ten years older than Masamune, he will die earlier, and how these two deal with it.
I do encourage you to look up the lyrics to each song at your own leisure, though. They’re very good.
The playlist has 9 songs and is 35 minutes long. I could’ve made it longer, but I wanted to keep the focus on Kojuro’s eventual death and there would have been more repeating artists. I have a bunch of other individual songs that make me think of these two, might share them at some point.

The Crooked Kind by Radical Face
I always got the feeling this song fits how Kojuro sees young Masamune, back when he was still Bontenmaru. His childhood wasn’t easy and he had to fight to eventually be recognized as the head of his clan. I particularly found the verse “So, collect your scars and wear 'em well / Your blood's as good an ink as any / Go scratch your name into the clouds / And pull 'em all... down“ fitting.
Hold My Hand by UNKLE
Masamune is a good leader and loved by his troops, but he can be rash. Kojuro is the force holding him down when he needs to, always watching his back. “Hold my hand / I need you now / Slow me down / I don't know how“
(also, holding hands is my personal weakness ‘’orz)
Keep This Place Beautiful by Brick + Mortar
At this point Kojuro knows they’re not immortal. He beckons Masamune to see; these are your lands, these are your people, these are your responsibilities. I will not be here forever. “One day I will be dead, I will be dust, keep this place beautiful“ (I visited this same song on a previous komasa week, here, because I have a lot of feelings about growing old together)
Bad Moon Rising (feat. Candace Devine) by Palestra, Candace Devine
I got a general Basara feel from this particular cover of this song, because it mentions forces of nature that tie neatly with the elemental powers of our heroes (and I like the tone and mood better than the original). Feeling of dread; something bad is coming. “Don't go around tonight / Well it's bound to take your life / There's a bad moon on the rise“
November Was White, December Was Grey by Say Hi
(the historical) Kojuro fell ill November and died on December the next year. The first two verses could be Kojuro’s POV, knowing he is ill and old. “When the spring brings the sun / I'll finally sleep” The rest of the song is worried Masamune’s POV; “My pacing has worn / All of the carpet out”. This song is the heart of the playlist.
Discoloration by Dawn Golden
The last line for Kojuro, bittersweet. “Your open mouth / Silence me in your coursing / Blood in my eyes / Dress me in your clothes / Swallow me whole”
Dead Eye by Middle Class Rut
The title is self-explanatory. Kojuro is dead; Masamune is not taking it well. I could copy+paste the entire lyrics here, but I’ll just leave you with this: “And everyone you love is already gone / I dreamt that I was drowning in the middle of the sea / But things like that don’t happen, to people like me / And that’s just what you tell yourself“
The Yawning Grave by Lord Huron
To end on a… well, not positive, but not entirely hopeless note, my pal @naanadougga has an AU where Kojuro and Masamune become dragons in the afterlife, and I feel this song pair fits that scenario well. This first part is from Kojuro’s POV, reminiscing lessons taught to Bontenmaru and recognazing that Masamune is in the present an old man as well. He will come for him soon. (also, I love how this is a waltz.)
Frozen Pines by Lord Huron
Masamune’s POV. “I am ready to follow you even though I don't know where / I've been waiting the night until you decide to take me there / Cause I know I don't wanna stay here forever it's time to be moving on / Oh, I don't wanna be the only one living if all of my friends are gone”
