🌸Ephemeral Blossoms 🌸

I'm very honoured to be have been able to contribute some of my work to 🌸 Ephemeral Blossoms Hakuouki zine ( @ephemeralblossomszine ). This is my first contribution, the cover!

I received a few guidelines for what the mods had in mind, but I was otherwise free to interpret and draw as I saw fit.

Those who got the zine (thank you!) might notice that thanks to this illustration I did manage to squeeze in Kazama and Chizuru somehow. 😄The early bird sticker is a little nod to the cover.

Many thanks to the mods of @ephemeralblossomszine for letting me draw the cover. I hope you like this as much as I had fun drawing it.

"I just want you to live"

I started drawing this for kiss day (23/05) on the day itself, so I'm a little late. I debated drawing a happy kiss, but I just really wanted to draw the sunset scenery from the movie.

Happy (correctly converted) birthday, Toshi 🎉

I know I've drawn their hug before (and this probably won't be the last time either), but it's such an important moment, I just had to. It's the moment where Hijikata accepts that he needs her by his side. Life -what little he has left - is better with her. Now that she's here, he can't imagine having to live until his last battle in pain and agony. Every excuse he's used in the past three months to convince himself it was the right choice to leave her behind, was countered by her. No, it's the right choice to let her stay. To keep her with him. The crushing weight on his shoulders feels lighter when she's with him. It's right now. He can breathe a little easier now.

I always liked how Chizuru says that his hug felt like "now he had [her], he didn't want to let go any more." The distance that had been there before, is gone. In the few moments of peace they have, he's no longer (just) the Vice Minister of the Army, but Toshizou, and she's Chizuru. Disregarding the spin-offs, it's the first time he addresses her as such in the main story as well.

It only gets a casual mention in Chizuru's narration (I got spoiled [ ] Hijikata-san was nice to me), but that causal time is so important to Hijikata's mental state of mind. He's no longer thinking about dying alone on the battlefield, but instead wishing for a chance of living a life with her by his side.

Hijikata mentioned that he hoped that their next kiss would taste a bit better than whatever Chizuru's life-saving kiss was. Well, I hope that they get many more opportunities to kiss. 😙

I originally drew this for completing the good ending of Hijikata's route (and thus completing the drawing marathon I'd been doing for the past few months), but then I missed my timing for HijiChi day due to glaze not working that weekend.

I've now fully finished Hijikata's route, including the bad endings-- and replaying the good ending because I really couldn't leave them on that sad note.

In his dying breath, he wants to comfort her-- but doesn't even reach her before the wind takes him. As beautifully tragic that ending is, they're much better off greeting the cherry blossoms once more when spring comes again and again.

The livestream archives have expired, so Heisuke hen is officially, completely, over. The impending cast changes have put quite a bit of mixed feelings over this production and the (near) future of HakuMyu, but I think that's also a testament of just how much this cast is loved by its audience (me included).

Happy 17th anniversary, Hakuouki~

Today, 18/09/2025, marks the 17th anniversary since the first game released. With every year Hakuouki adds to its life cycle, I can't help but think how impressive it is that a series manages to still stay relevant after all these years. It's a testament of how good this series really is, and how respectful to the history it so heavily borrows inspiration from. Maybe the cherry blossoms bloom and scatter beautifully for yet another year~

I haven't drawn any big illustration because I've been so busy this summer with the zine prep (now that is a big illustration), being busy at work and dealing with the physical downsides of stress. But hey, I'll always find time to draw Toshi and his flowy hair.

🌸🌸Happy 10th anniversary since the release of Hakuouki Shinkai, and happy first anniversary of the Blu-ray for Musical Hakuouki Shinkai - Hijikata Toshizou hen. 🌸🌸

I drew it as a companion piece to the picture I drew for the general anniversary, where he's dressed in his original colours. Design-wise, I still prefer the original coat, but HakuMyu really made me appreciate the Shinkai version. It's had such a big influence on how I depict the coat as well (might not always be obvious, but it's there).

After seeing Ruri in a super cute cat-themed kimono, I wanted to draw Chizuru wearing it, and with Kubota looking so good in his Hagi-play kimono, I drew her with Hijikata wearing those clothes.

It's been a while since I drew normal-sized humans, but it was mostly a fun exercise to draw the clothes. No story here, just power couple looking good together.
