can I have a song break down on μ΄λ€λ―Έλ (What Kind of Future) by Woozi? thanks in advance!
λ€! If anyone else wants to see a song broken down, check out my breakdown masterlist, and then send me a request if I haven't done it already!
I'm going to do my breakdowns from now on a little differently than I have in the past. To make them less overwhelming and easier to digest, I'm going to select a few grammar points and vocabulary words that are used frequently throughout the song and explain those. I hope this is helpful for your understanding of the song -- lmk what you think! Let's start!
ALSO, I referred to this video for both the lyrics and for some help with translating them, so go check it out!
Woozie - "μ΄λ€ λ―Έλ (What Kind of Future)
λͺ¨λ κ² = λͺ¨λ κ²μ΄ = Everything
λμ κ°λ€ = to close your eyes
λμ λ³λ€ = to open your eyes
μμ¬νλ€ = to relax; to feel at ease
μ΄κΈλλ€ = to go against [something]
μκ°μ κ±°μ¬λ¬ κ°λ€ = to go back in time
λ°λ²λ₯ μΉλ€ = to struggle; to squirm
λ³΄κ³ μΆλ€ = to miss (literally βto want to seeβ)
그리μνλ€ = to long for; to miss
μ΄λμ = Before I/you know it
μμ΄λ²λ¦¬λ€ = to forget
보기 μ«μλ°λ λ³΄κ³ μΆκ³
λ―Έμ΄λ°λ 그리μνλ
λλ λ μ μκ° μλλΌ
I, who misses you even though I donβt want to see you, and I longs for you even though I hate you, donβt even understand myself.
This structure is attached to verbs and adjectives to mean "despite," "in spite," or "even though." In my opinion, it's a little stronger than -μ/μ΄/μ¬λ.
보기 μ«μλ°λ = Even though I don't want to see you
λ―Έμ΄λ°λ = Even though I hate you
그리μνλ λ = I long for you (literally βI who longs for you)
-λλΌκ³ μ is the formal version of -λλΌ. This is attached to stems as a way of reflecting on your past experiences.
λλ λ μ μκ° μλλΌ = I don't even know myself
Here, Woozi is reflecting on his past experience -- he notices, based on living his whole life, that he doesn't know himself.
μ΄κΈλλ²λ¦° μ°λ¦¬ λ―Έλμ
μκ°μ κ±°μ¬λ¬ κ° μ μλ€λ©΄
κ±°μΉ κΈ°λ³΄λ€ λ°λ»νκ²
λ λΆλ₯΄λ©° 보λ΄μ€ μ μμκΉ
In our future that didnβt line up, if we could go back in time, could I let you go, warmly rather than roughly?
This structure is attached to verb stems to mean "to be able to" or "can." 보λ΄μ€ μ μλ€ means "can let go." The opposite of this, -γΉ/μ μ(κ°) μλ€, means "unable to" or "cannot."
This structure is added to stems to mean βif.β It is different from -(μΌ)λ©΄, which also means βif,β because -(γ΄/λ)λ€λ©΄ is used in more hypothetical situations rather than for situations that are actually likely to happen. In the case of μκ°μ κ±°μ¬λ¬ κ° μ μλ€λ©΄, heβs talking about going back in time, which is not possible; the question is hypothetical.
In some contexts, this structure is attached to verb stems to mean βshall we [verb]?β Other times, it is used similarly to how we say βI wonder...β in English. The line, λ λΆλ₯΄λ©° 보λ΄μ€ μ μμκΉ, means βI wonder if you could call me and let me go?β Heβs essentially wondering rather than directly asking a question about whether or not this is possible.Β
Thatβs about it for this breakdown -- lmk what you think of this new format! I hope itβs helpful :) See you in the next lesson! νμ΄ν
