New commission type info for those of my followers who donāt use/have [a] furaffinity account.
For the first time ever...
My queue is actually full.Ā
I have 3 pixel icons, 1 pixel full body, 2 sketches, 1 soft line, and 3 full renders to complete. Iām just blown away right now...For the first time ever it actually feels like this is going to be a viable career for me. Doing art as a career has been my dream since I was very little, and I never applied myself to it like I should have because I was always told that itāll never be a viable career choice.Ā
Look who was wrong.Ā

Wrist, wrist, wrist...
My right (and left but that one doesnāt matter as much) wrist is almost constantly in pain whenever i have it in any other position than completely flat (fingers extended) and relaxed... it really sucks that itās NOT possible for me to just leave my wrist like this now..but I am going to set up an appointment with an ortho or rheumy as soon as possible. Things might be slightly slower than usual because of this, but Iām not going to stop working unless I physically cannot hold my pen any longer.Ā
Until then Iāll just keep spinning my wrists.
Dirty Truths from a Struggling Artist. (Copied from FA Journal)
Alright, so since this is my commission account, you will RARELY see personal journals like this posted here, but I'm actually getting worried now...so here goes. Oog..I'm not even sure where to start. I guess with last night.... Last night we got news that Ari's great grandfather is on his last leg. They don't know how much longer he has left to live. While that news in itself is bad, and saddening...the worst part of that news is that we will lose our home. Ari and I are married, and have two dogs...while we're not above moving back in with our parents in this desperate situation...well..it's not exactly an option. My parents will be prepping their house for sale in the spring and we cannot live with them because of that. Her mother...well she's another story I can't really get into, because it's deeply complicated...but the short of it is that her mother is disabled just as much as I am and also cannot work a regular 9 to 5 and has very little income. It would put even more stress on Ari, and I can't have that. For my new followers...and maybe old ones whom have forgotten or whatever the reason need a reminder..I am disabled, and cannot work a "normal" 9 to 5 job because the general hours, stress levels, and expectations from not being my own boss actually put so much stress on my body that I am constantly in pain and get sick repeatedly because of being around people whom may have illnesses for an extended period of time..I have a weakened immune system. Being sick all the time causes me to miss work, and eventually I get let go. It's happened more times than I can count. "Why don't you apply for SSDI?" I did.. and I was denied... twice. I did get a part time job at the local roller rink, a place I have worked at since I was 14 on and off. It's a very physically demanding job, but it's also comfortable because I'm so familiar with it. However it does take it's toll on me. I have only worked there for less than 3 months and I've already gotten sick with bronchitis that lasted 3 weeks and sent me home from work/ made me miss work several times. So about two weeks ago I got a few commissions under my belt that gave me some hope. I've been producing art at an alarming rate for myself, and have a pretty good schedule down. With streaming nearly all of my work it helps motivate me. Same with how I'm working my payment system, though I may alter it slightly to avoid being scammed in the future. We'll see how it goes. Anyway, the super short of the story is that I am doing everything I can to get myself out there and earn money to be able to help pay for bills. Currently with my part time job working 20 hours a week, I bring home a measly $150 every two weeks because I make below my states minimum wage. (Yes, I know you're going to tell me that's illegal, but my employer has found a loophole around that. Yes... there are loopholes in the law.) Currently in order to live in the same place we're living now we'd need to pay $1,500-$1,600 in rent alone per month. That includes NOTHING. No electric, no water, no internet. Electric only runs us around $100 a month, water $80 per quarter, and internet is $90 a month. That rounds us out at a grand total of around $1,800 a month on the high end. That's BEFORE food (and other small things like cellphones etc). Which we spend approximately $300 a month on. That includes dog food and household items. Rounding us out at $2100 a month on the high side. This is before medical expenses which can run up to $200 a month depending on certain variables. Essentially in order to stay where we are living now..we need to make $2500 a month to be comfortable. Right now...Ari brings home around $600 every two weeks...with my additional $150 (not guaranteed) from the rink every two weeks that brings us to $1,500 every month. We are a thousand dollars behind what we need in order to be just above the level of drowning. Yes, Ari and I are below the poverty level in our state. Yes, we are poor, and yes..I know we're not the only ones. With my average completion times for my art this is the breakdown... I can finish 3-5 full renders a week depending on level of complexity/characters in the image if that's all I worked on. I can finish 5+ cell shaded pieces per week depending on level of complexity/characters in the image if that's all I worked on. I can finish 10-15 icons per week if that's all I worked on. I can finish 2-3 reference sheets per week if that's all I worked on. I can finish 2-5 sketches per day depending on complexity/characters in the image. There are plenty of things I can do per week to earn that money that we need. The problem is that I don't have the exposure. No one knows who I am. In my account move I lost 300 followers because FurAffinity refuses to allow name changes. Ideally if I could bring home even $500 a month on average that would make us able to afford a one bedroom apartment somewhere that isn't notoriously infested with bedbugs or mice...because if we don't get that amount, that's all we're going to get. So, you read this far...Thank you for taking the time to read about my shitty situation. You may be wondering now.. "What can I do to help?" Simply put the easiest thing you can do is commission me. I don't just do furry things either, I can draw anything with enough references and just a bit of time to study. "I would commission you, but I don't have any money!" That's okay. Tell your friends about me, about my art.. have them tell their friends. Word of mouth is really powerful. I guess that's ...all I'm going to share for now. Also, that I'm scared...but still hopeful. Hopeful that I can achieve my dream of working as an illustrator full time. Of being able to support my family and still take care of myself so I'm not run into the ground and sick all the time. I want to earn an honest living, not taking hand outs and be begging for help all the time. Hope is all I have. It's the one thing that keeps me strong. Help me keep my hope alive.
Three of my most recent finished pieces. Iāll write more about them later tonight.Ā
The animation on the second picture (third) was my very first attempt at animating something Ā colored, and my second only attempt at animating in general. All self taught last night.Ā
Some of my most recent finished pieces.
The first one is a commissioned colored sketch for two good friends of mine, Darkomi (Dark), and UbiquitousToxicity (Rae).
The second one is a fully rendered light and color study I did, featuring my wifeās fursona.
The third was just a practice new sketch style with my character Mel.
Starting is difficult.Ā
Starting anything new or challenging is difficult. This journey that Iām on, is both new and challenging, and itās very difficult while Iām in the start of it. It would be my journey to improve my art, and in turn, improve myself.Ā
Since I was little I was told that I was a great artist, and should pursue a career in the arts. Only to be held back by people telling me that art is not a valid career, and earning a living off of artwork is nearly impossible.Ā
Now I know itās not, not because Iām earning a living off of my artwork, yet, Ā but because I kn ow itās possible because I know people who do it. People who can rake in $600-$800+ a week, and still work for big companies doing freelance work.
When I started doing art I almost instantly started taking commissions, and this was a mistake, but I learned from it. I learned that back then I didnāt have the self-dicipline to be an artist who took commissions, but now I see it differently. There was one person who wrote a journal on FurAffinity years ago, Mosa, an adult artist who makes a living doing furry art, that was aboutĀ āprofessionalāĀ artists havingĀ āart block.ā That journal has stuck with me since I read it. I twas about how a person who is a professional, who takes peoples money to provide a service, cannot haveĀ āart blockā because you took someones money promising to deliver a service in a decent amount of time. So just because youāreĀ ānot feeling itā doesnāt mean you donāt draw.
Since then I learned how to deal with āart blockā or what I like to callĀ āart steps.ā I call them art steps because image yourself as a tiny person/creature/whatever on a really huge infinitely high staircase and the only way is up. You get comfortable in your art for a little while and then you reach what appears to be a wall, but you look up, and you can see that there is in fact a top that you can get over...but how? Once you figure out how (improvement through persistence and study) you can start to climb the creative ladder. You might slip a few times, or become tired, but donāt give up. Eventually youāll get to the top of the new step, and all will be well again.Ā
Iāve read a lot of articles, blogs, and watched a lot of videos on self-improvement in art and in general by successful professionals and they all say the same thing. If you take commissions, that is your job. You are now a professional artist. If you were working for a company and you didnāt show up one day becauseĀ āyou didnāt feel like itā youād be fired. Doing commissions is exactly the same way. You might have someone be really patient with you and totally okay with waiting forever for art from you, but do you think that person is going to commission you again? Itās doubtful. Others also take notice of this, because people talk.Ā
Learning all of this the hard way? Not ideal, and thatās exactly what I did. Now Iāve been busting ass to not finish what I had started 6 months or more again, but restart and show these people what Iāve learned and improved and exceed their expectations.Ā
ALWAYS aim to exceed expectations, but only do everything to your best ability.Ā
The two pictures I posted are of my very first digital piece (done on an ipad with Autodesk Sketchbook Pro) and my most recent digital piece using a Wacom Intuos Pro with Autodesk Sketchbook Pro.) Ā This is all self taught, approximately 3 years of improvement. I posted this not only as a reminder to myself, but to hopefully provide some inspiration to young or old aspiring artists to not give up if youāre feeling hopeless. If you want something bad enough, youāll figure out exactly how to get it. Iāve decided what I want, and whatās good for me. I am on my journey, but I just started....
