The Betrayal Hurt Hinata More Than He Lets On

After Komaeda shows his ‘true colors’ during the trial and gets tied up). In this scene, Soda is complaining about Komaeda and arguing with Hinata on the beach.

"I was also deceived by him..."

Soda is doing his usual yelling, but Hinata goes quiet and looks down. His expressions speaks volumes about how deep Komaeda’s betrayal cut him.

Komaeda is literally the first person Hinata wakes up to on the beach. He was friendly, reassuring, and spent the entire intro guiding Hinata around the island. Because Hinata had no memories and was completely lost, Komaeda became his main anchor and his savior too. So when Komaeda turns out to be unhinged during the first trial, Hinata was shocked and felt betrayed.

"He helped me when I fainted at the beginning, so I thought he was a good guy..."

When Soda calls him "sweetly naive" Hinata gets surprisingly defensive and snaps back.

"Are you saying that you didn't believe in Komaeda and everyone at the beginning!?"

Hinata is defending the genuine connection he thought they shared at the start. He wanted to trust Komaeda.

He feels deeply hurt because he genuinely cared about Komaeda and trusted him first. Even after finding out how dangerous Komaeda is, Hinata can't completely erase the comfort Komaeda gave him on day one. He’s frustrated at Komaeda, but he's also frustrated at himself for still caring.

Hinata’s talent & Suspicion

When the group is discussing the traitor and Monokuma appears to unlock a new island.

"I think Hinata is the most suspicious."

Hinata was shocked by Komaeda’s response. He didn’t expect Komaeda to suspect him especially.

"Y...you said I'm the most suspicious!"

Hinata immediately calls him back out on it. Even with everything else going on: Monokuma, new island opening up… Hinata is fixated on what Komaeda thinks of him. He couldn’t just let Komaeda’s comment slide.

Komaeda’s feelings

Following up right after the last scene, Soda confronts Komaeda privately to ask why he suspects Hinata.

Komaeda tells his opinions/theories about Hinata’s body-discovery history quickly turns into something way more personal.

Komaeda is genuinely reminiscing about how kind Hinata was to him.

When Komaeda catches the Despair Disease, Hinata actually goes out of his way to check on him in the hospital. For someone like Komaeda, who believes his bad luck destroys any chance at love or connection, Hinata’s kindness was overwhelming.

"But such happiness hasn't existed in my life up until now..."

Komaeda wants connection, but his trauma and luck cycle have convinced him that good things always lead to absolute despair. Hinata’s empathy feels "too good to be true".

Komaeda keeps in mind every ‘kind’ thing Hinata has ever done for him: visiting him in the hospital, talking to him when no one else would. He just admits that Hinata’s kindness brought him a level of happiness he isn't used to having and that terrifies him.

The Shift to Coldness

After Komaeda beats the Final Dead Room and accesses the student profiles, he learns the truth that Hinata was never an Ultimate at all, but a talentless Reserve Course student.

Even after Chapter 1, when Komaeda went full unhinged during the class trial and everyone else in the group started treating him like a freak, Komaeda still talked to Hinata with a weird kind of affection and gentleness. He sometimes teased him and he always sought out Hinata’s presence and treated him like he was someone special.

Hinata had gotten used to Komaeda being weirdly attached to him. So when Komaeda comes out and looks Hinata dead in the eyes, and says: "Can you, a Reserve Course student, not talk to me like we're friends?” It is a sudden change but what comes right after: “I think I’m going to cross you out of the possible traitor list since it’s impossible for a reserve course student who has no talent to be part of the future agency.”

Komaeda basically means: "Yes, you are nothing." but in a sense that Hinata is harmless and has nothing to do with Future agency which is good and bad at the same time?…. Neutral I would say. (Bad according to Komaeda since Hinata is a reserve course student and Good since Hinata has nothing to do with the future agency).

Looking at Hinata’s expression in the void, Komaeda’s words validated Hinata’s deepest fear: that without talent, his existence has no value, no purpose and no place among these people. I also think that Hinata was already kinda ‘suffocating’ under his own inferiority complex but hearing the one person who originally made him feel seen and ‘accepted’ now openly look down on him for being talentless confirms every dark thought Hinata ever had about himself.

For Hinata, his entire life's drive was to be "someone special" He carried a deep, painful complex about being ordinary. Being stuck in a killing game alongside Ultimates already made him feel out of place, but he held onto a hope that maybe, just maybe, his forgotten memory meant he had a cool Ultimate talent hidden inside him. Then comes the reveal: He is nobody.

Komaeda steps up and voices his exact internal terror out loud: He is staring at the void of his own identity and right when he is questioning his existence.

Komaeda’s attitude towards Hinata

The fact that Owari and Kuzuryu both react to Komaeda’s sudden shift proves it isn't just in Hinata's head

Everyone saw how Komaeda hovered around Hinata, so when he suddenly flips a switch and treats Hinata with coldness, it’s so shocking that even Owari who usually doesn't overthink, immediately calls Komaeda out for being needlessly cruel and harsh towards Hinata. And it’s also a shock for Hinata as well, I think he tries to process both his existence and Komaeda’s behavior towards him.

Hinata's Obsession with Talent

It’s not about Komahina but I liked Hinata’s reaction in the manga. To the others, talent doesn't matter but to him, talent means a lot to him.

Soda try to reassure him: "It doesn't really matter what it is, right? You're you after all" and tries to be supportive in his own gruff way with "I don't really care whether you have a talent or not..."

But Hinata responds with: “IT’S NOT GOOD!!” and "I care about it!"

Hinata hates that he can't remember his talent, and he doesn’t seem to like when people brush it off like it's no big deal.

He needs to have a talent to justify his own presence among the Ultimates. His friends have talent but for Hinata, who is desperately clinging to the hope that he's somebody special, not knowing his talent is deeply frustrating. But right after, he changes topics because even though he wants to know about his ‘talent’, talking about it also makes him uncomfortable and prefers not to think too much about it.

Blushing Makoto and blushing Hajime are also two of my absolute favorite things, so they are both far too adorable for me to handle.

And Kyoko is dressed as a maid, but her outfit still has such a cool and elegant style that suits her perfectly!! She looks incredibly cute 💕

I also absolutely love the way Nagito is peering into Hajime’s face as though he is teasing him 😭💕 Both Makoto’s and Hajime’s ahoges are reacting so strongly that they look strangely suggestive, cough, cough, I mean incredibly cute and absolutely perfect. Hajime’s reaction in particular is so adorable that I cannot stop grinning every time I look at it. Thank you so, so much!!

You are right. Around this time last year, none of us could have imagined that 2x2 was going to be announced. I looked back because I could not remember exactly when it was revealed, and it was during the Nintendo Direct on September 12. It has not even been a full year yet! 😲

The Slayhem route was announced overseas first, but overall, I still feel that information tends to reach the English speaking community rather late. I hope I can help close that gap, because I want to enjoy all the new information about 2x2 and Danganronpa together with everyone too!

in 1999, an italian named giancarlo pasquini released a europop song under the alias dave rogers called Deja Vu. this song was picked up as the theme song for the above anime. it in turn became a meme, a shorthand for drifting and Cool Moves as a concept.

in 1983, air canada flight 143, a full sized 767, ran out of fuel halfway to edmonton, alberta. this is not something you want to have happen to a huge airplane. the flight chose to try and make an emergency landing at a nearby decomissioned airforce base (as they were falling fast and could not make it to a proper airport), where they ran into a second problem: they were falling out of the sky at 500 feet per mile, but reached gimli (the base in question) while still too high to safely land. normally a plane would just do a big loop-de-loop to lose altitude, but they had maybe three minutes of airtime left before they hit the ground: not enough time to make any kind of circle. the pilot, therefore, decided to execute a side slip to lose speed and altitude. this is Not a move you want to do with a massive 767, because airplanes are not built for that and if you screw it up that plane is hitting the ground at a high speed at a weird angle and breaking into a million pieces. nevertheless, the captain tried it... and succeeded. the plane landed perfectly, and there were no major injuries! (a couple of people did get minor injuries when evacuating the plane after.) he did it so well, in fact, that the plane was refueled, flown out of gimli a couple days later, and continued to fly for another 20 years with the nickname "Gimli Glider."
