Quick Glance Into Malex's Future
Forrest took a deep breath as he looked down the familiar block. It was just over three years since he had last been back in Roswell. âIt had been a good few years but returning he had been hit anew with how much he had missed having Alex Manes in his life and suddenly, there was Alex loading bags into the back seat of his car. It had to be a sign.
âHey Manesâ Alex didnât turn so Forrest dashed down the block and tapped his shoulder âAlexâÂ
Alex turned to face him and smiled âForrestâhowâve you been?â
âGoodâwould you have time to grab a cup of coffee and catch up?âÂ
There it wasâAlexâs face softened and his eyes were filled with so much loveâeverything Forrest ever hoped to see so it took a split second for him to realize Alex wasnât looking at him. He was looking over his shoulder â passed him.
Forrest turned part way to follow Alexâs gaze to see a tall man with a black cowboy hat. The man was walking slowly while he carefully balanced a tray with two coffees in his right hand and tilted down to the left to hold the hand of a toddling little girl proudly carrying a Crashdown bag. Â
As they got closer, Alex bent down with his arms opened wide. The cowboy let go and the little girl excitedly held the bag out as she ran forward âPapa doughâ, she cried.
Alex scooped her up and laughing met the cowboyâs eyes âI thought Daddy wasnât going to get doughnutsâÂ
He smiled. âIt wasnât meâthis oneâ he affectionally ruffled the little girlâs hair âhas Arturo wrapped around her little fingerâshe looks at him, smiles and doughnuts appearâÂ
Alex smiled tenderlyââWell she does have your smileâÂ
Michael met his smile and gently caressed his shoulder âI always thought it was because she has your eyes.âÂ
The scene was so intimate it hit Forrest like a gut punch. He managed to steady himself with a âHey GuerinâÂ
Alex turned slightly as he suddenly remembered Forrest and Michael nodded but before he could answer the little girl chimed in âDats usâÂ
Alex smiled, âThatâs right my smart girl thatâs our family. Can you tell our friend Mr. Forrest your name?â â
âI Nowa Alexandwa GuwinâÂ
Forrest felt the last vestages of his hopes slip awayââHow old are you?â She raises two fingers.Â
âTwo wowâ youâre a big girl.â Forrest turned to Alex, âI canât believe your a father, it seemsâŚ
âGo see brudder. Share Doughsâ Cried the little girl to her dads.Â
Michael laughed as took the squirming toddler. âAunt Bonnie will probably love a donut . To Alex he said, âIâll get Nora into the car â they are going to be waiting for us.â
Forrest looked at Alex - âBrother?â
âOur son is due in a week or so â we are on the way to a doctorâs appointment to see a sonogram but I would like to catch up. Why not come by the house â weâre always there these days.â
âIâll see â Itâs good to see you Manes.â
Alex smiled â âActually, itâs Guerin, now.â
Forrest stood watching as the family pulled away. Alex Manes really was goneâŚ
