(Honestly, I just thought it was a fun idea, and I wanted to share the experience with everyone. Also, a huge thank you to everyone who contributed songs for this. 💜)

Worked at a traveling black wizarding market, where his parents once sold him.

His "natural" face, insofar as he can even remember it, is marked by old scars and burns. For years he was paraded around as part of the entertainment. Visitors paid to watch him reshape his face while his owner found increasingly creative ways to ruin it again.

Maverick was lucky, though, since not only did the face-changing technique began to bore the masses, he also turned out to be exceptionally skilled at craftsmanship and to have a sharp mind.

It was now his responsibility to repair cages, magical restraints and enclosures for creatures. If anything broke, Maverick was expected to fix it.

Despite the abuse, Maverick never really hated life on the black market. He simply never knew anything else. Where else could he have gone, or who else could he have turned to for help anyway? The witches and wizards who visited the black market were just as questionable and shady as the people who worked there. Everyone had a secret darker than the next and more disgusting. Nobody trusted anybody. Everyone had something to hide.

Maverick changes his appearance almost constantly. It's how he goes through his day. Sometimes to steal a loaf of bread. Sometimes because he no longer remembers which face is actually his.

One day, while hiding from someone he'd upset, he ducked behind the enormous mermaid tanks. He changed his face like he'd done a thousand times before.

Then he heard her laughter. The mermaid.

Somehow... she always knew it was him. They were both prisoners in different ways. She behind thick glass. He behind a life that had never truly belonged to him. Neither could leave. Somehow, without ever saying it aloud, they understood each other.

While repairing her tank one afternoon, a chain snapped, and he fell into the water. Maverick cannot swim. She stopped him from drowning.

Afterwards he kept finding excuses to return whenever he could. He would pull ridiculous faces simply to hear her laugh. He would rearrange his work schedule around seeing her. He would skip meals. He would start to think, "I'll just stay five more minutes." Those five minutes easily became five hours.

He became fascinated with mermaids. Their language. Their habits. Their magic. Their anatomy. Or perhaps he was only ever fascinated by her.

Love, obsession... somewhere along the way the line disappeared. Did he mistake his obsession with love from the very beginning? He doesn't know. He doesn't care. As long as he can only be with her.

Did the mermaid truly love him? Or did she just use him to feed on his soul? Did she bewitch his mind for him to become obsessed?

The Ministry eventually found the travelling market. Aurors raided it. Fire spread. By sunrise, countless witches, wizards and magical creatures were dead. Including her.

One of the Aurors told him, "Heads up, buddy. We saved you. You're free now." "Saved me?" Maverick let out a hollow laugh. "You took my whole world from me."

Maverick turned really bitter. Everything he ever knew and had was gone. He never forgave the Ministry. He knows he can't do anything against them on his own, but that's not what he's out to do anyway.

He has no interest in revenge. He knows revenge cannot give him back the love of his lif. Only he himself can...

Instead, he begins studying magic with an obsession that borders on madness.

Years pass. And his research only grows darker.

After the Aurors' attack, he had collected the remains of the mermaid and carefully taken them to safety.

Alongside his studies, he spends his time searching various cemeteries for perfect body parts. His gift as a Metamorphmagus makes him almost impossible to recognise. By the time anyone notices someone has been digging through graves, Maverick has already become someone else.

Every stitched tendon. Every borrowed bone. Every whispered incantation serves a single purpose... To bring her back to life.

Whether it was ever love in the first place... is a question he stopped asking himself years ago.
