got a little au i suddenly expanded on so now i wanna post it. i don't know if anyones talked about it before or thought of it (im sure someone has) but i live for angst. so for the first summary just imagine if like... the pods malfunctioned so now they have to stay in the simulation Forever
so once the virus infected the neo world program and the simulation started, the pods outside were compromised and disconnected. literally no more life support and fluids and nutrients and whatever else that was hooked up. so throughout the entire killing game, while their virtual bodies and minds are well, their real life bodies have been slowly rotting. their consciousness transferred inside is the only real thing left of them
// i had considered doing something differently with izuru, maybe he singled himself out some or he was intentionally kept alive because he’s really important, and he could ensure more fun and despair to come, but i think this guy is screwed. the virus in my mind is what compromised the pods as it had festered to the rest of the code and system, and he couldn’t wriggle out of it. i imagine, if anything, junko kept this one detail from him, to surprise izuru, see if she could get a peculiar reaction out of him. because also its so much worse to lose the Strongest experiment in the world
regardless, this was in junkos plan to ensure the most despairing ending she could think of, and so she tells them what happens in chapter 5 near the end, on top of all the virtual reality and remnants of despair and izuru stuff. ALL of it goes to shit, everyone freaks out
the idea is not the most insane or groundbreaking concept ever. again im sure someone thought of it. what gets ME so messed up over it, is the reveal and the aftermath
i can imagine two paths to this. in the worst ending, the simulation would do the default shutdown, and everyone’s consciousness would be lost and destroyed, and they die
or the more ideal path, the best one they can get, is they defeat junko and the virus, basically just the regular shutdown ending, paving their own future by some miracle, and decide to stay inside the simulation. but it’s so much more messy, angry, horrifying, destructive, they break down even through the help of chiaki/their loved ones. unlike the canon ending where they have a confident boost of hope after nearly slipping into despair, they instead have a BURST of rage, hopeful yeah but they’re fucking distraught
and so they wipe the virus away and the program manages to stand without it, the survivors can create their own life now, so they won’t forget the others, so it wasn’t all for nothing. it somewhat feels like a waste, since they wanted to get off the island, but they’ll have to make the most of it now
so from there on, the remaining five just have to live. live the way the simulation originally intended, but far too late, without a way to revive the others by re-coding or resetting the events entirely. it’s all destroyed by now and it’s just them left. having to deal with the weight of all these truths and just, carry on with each other. and getting this privilege just feels so extremely wrong. expecting to leave the island for so long just to stay in it, makes it feel infinitely more empty
so theres that..... idk man its just the thought of them having to deal with this and lean on the other that makes me jump up and down like a chimpanzee. you dont understand like AUUGGHH. so ig here are my general thoughts:
a side thought but perhaps… hajime would almost fall into such deep despair during the trial, knowing he caused so much of this, it’s his friends who pull him out of it instead, just not saying it so nicely because goddammit we aren’t losing him too. and he pulls through
of course naegi, kyoko and byakuya (+ toko aoi and yasuhiro eventually!) try to interact with them from that point on, trying to find a way to revive the others for them despite the unlikeliness(yeah thats never working out), but in the meantime, they constantly manage the NWP to keep them updated and healthy, never running out of necessities, offering therapy etc etc
maybe in the future, they can rebuild and re-code something similar to what usami was, their own protective symbol of hope there in case of any kind of emergency, mainly medical. absolutely no imagery similar to anything in the past though. they are SICK of bunnies and bears lol. i imagine they try to make it more robot-like instead of ai (like usami and chiaki). emphasizing "this isnt real, we're not trying to make you think its real, its just a robot companion"
and just to ensure their safety the FF would make it so they’re not vulnerable to extreme/incurable diseases and such, but of course they can still get injured/feel pain, even die from horrible accidents, etc etc. if they had programmed it to where they can’t be hurt or die at all, that would destroy their sense of reality (too much atleast)
the nwp i also imagine is ofc insanely advanced, down to natural bodily functions to aging and the basics and all, id assume everything still nearly feels like real life even after facing the truth. either from how realistic the program is, or because of how they’ve become so used to it, maybe both, nothing exactly changes when it comes to that kind of feeling? but of course they feel more aware of it all more than anything else, they just have a bunch of ups and downs and it’s a mess. either all of it feels so real or it all feels so fake. and both are equally bad. choosing and accepting their future where they stay inside the simulation has just been embedded into them weirdly...if that makes sense. they flip flop between feelings often
also i think they definitely took a gigantic depression sleep together afterwards. like. the program nearly collapses, but they wake up on the beach, see each other, and just collapse in one pile. it’s over so they’re just done with it all. so they walk to the same cottage, drag all the blankets and pillows on the floor, and sleep together
i can see all of them having to sleep in the same room from there on tbh, clinging to each other like puppies in a wet box without their mama. just making sure everyone’s eating and hydrating well, pestering each other to Take Care Of Themselves, because this is their very last chance they were lucky to get in the first place. their bonds would have strengthened So Dramatically it’s too much to describe here
but of course, even after everything, hajime still has all kinds of extreme guilt. he was still the one who put the virus in, he feels as though he doesn’t deserve to live no matter what, even if that wasn’t really him who did it. but the others don’t allow this kind of talk, so he tries to “make up for it,” devoting every waking moment to taking care of the others, when he can hardly look after himself, and in fact is consciously avoiding it, hurting himself in the process. that’s just how he is. i think hes always naturally been a gifter than a receiver anyway
regarding memories, i think possibly their remnant memories and regular memories have always been in the program, just separated, so once they had learned the truth, things resurfaced, so it slowly comes back to them how it would in regular post-game, just kinda differently. they at least don’t have to deal with the extreme physical body horror though, but it still affects them, even just knowing what happened. so the others would all feel extremely uncomfortable in their bodies regardless. fuyuhiko/akane/hajime Especially. like
fuyuhiko becomes extremely aware of his face/vision. the migraines/headaches hurt so much more, he has the urge to claw something out of his socket when there’s nothing there. akane loses her appetite, can’t really enjoy meat anymore. plus all her feelings and the mourning is catching up to her, along with not knowing what really happened to her siblings, she is extremely weak, doesn’t have the energy she used to have. she genuinely cannot take care of herself anymore
hajime and his identity still becomes extremely fucked up as we all know, that doesn’t really change, and that’s way too big of a topic to put here but you get it. the only thing he'd been spared of is his experimented hairy body. the only basics, is that even though hes now stopped taking care of himself, he’s Always trimming his hair. whole body is always burning, itching, so stressed he gets headaches, can’t sleep, gets that nagging feeling of numbness and boredom, he tries to keep himself constantly busy, can’t deal with loneliness, fights with his consciousness and all. izuru still haunts him a whole lot
knowing that their real bodies are rotting, that feeling is so repulsive to them that they all become too aware of it, and feel dirty themselves. kazuichi especially feels physically filthy often, doesn’t cover up as much, dissociates a lot of the time, even the most
i personally headcanon that sonia scalped junko and wore her hair as a wig, so if/once that resurfaces, that drives her mad as well. it’s the sole reason why she doesn’t have her hair as long now. and even just knowing what she did to her people totally breaks her. she just enters a state of numbness from the shock
also of course there are nightmares. especially About the body horror & their actions so that doesn’t help
updates for the program do launch, just while they’re all asleep, that or they install without them even knowing/noticing. fixing things, giving them new things to do, making sure they’re always piled with necessities, etc. eventually, the FF adds rain, which was a missing detail that was only briefly mentioned in sdr2. then they realize this, and its something they would literally CHEER for and cherish. rain is not so gloomy all the time, i personally find it a lot more refreshing or carefree or happy most of the time. so it would be very important to them
regarding updates though, they’re also extremely paranoid and terrified every day that the program could malfunction, or someone on the outside could come in and destroy it, like they could all die any second. it's only a computer afterall, even if its an extremely powerful one. it haunts them every waking second, being so powerless, it makes them scared to go to sleep. they have to live every day like it’s their last
at a certain point they just feel like minuscule toys, wandering NPC’s at times. they are literally just human minds in a virtual flesh bag made up of numbers, so i couldn't blame them tbh
alsoo after the program refreshed itself, anything related to monokuma like the rocks, funhouse and the trial grounds, have completely vanished. but usami’s house, minimaru, and the memorial shrine hiyoko made is still there. basically just anything related to the others. i think they could expand the shrine into something for Everyone who died. just so they never ever forget
anddd uh yah. i think thats all there is i have to say about this so far. i love fucked up found family traumabonding. such horrible fates these guys have to meet. i know that the BEST ending would be that they manage to reset it and everyone else lives inside, blissfully unaware and forgetting everything that had happened, living together in tropical paradise as intended. feel free to imagine that, i love it too and want that so bad for them, i just prefer my angst hehe. and generally, it seems more realistic to me, and makes it so that everything else before had real meaning. thank u for reading this far i love my goobers
