PlayStation Ceasing Disc Production Sparks $450 Million Lawsuit
Non-profit SMC is suing Sony on behalf of 1.7 million Dutch users, alleging that ending disc production will hand PlayStation a digital mono
“Dutch non-profit group Stichting Massaschade & Consument is suing the company for roughly $450 million in damages, alleging that killing discs will hand PlayStation a monopoly over its digital games.”
"The end of physical discs removes the last place where a PlayStation game could still be bought and sold at a competitive price," Lucia Melcherts, chair of SMC, said in a statement to wccftech.
"No discs means no second-hand market and no alternative to the PlayStation Store, so from 2028, Sony alone decides what a game costs and even how long you are allowed to use it.
That is exactly the harm our Fair PlayStation claim is about: a price can never be fair when the buyer is left with no ownership and no alternative."
“Melcherts is referring to the robust PlayStation terms of service, which explicitly lays out that "the software is licensed to you, not sold." Digital purchases are not the same as physical.
You are not buying a copy of a game, you are buying a non-exclusive personal license to play the game, which can be revoked at any moment without compensation.
Combined with a closed ecosystem in which only the PlayStation Store is made available, the only option consumers have is to pay whatever Sony demands, without ever having the guarantee of true ownership.“
PlayStation Facing Antitrust Complaint In Mexico Over Physical Game Discs
Sony is facing an antitrust complaint from Mexican lawmakers because of their decision to stop making physical games.
“Sony is now facing regulatory action in Mexico over their decision to stop making PlayStation game discs.”
“Federal Representative Iraís Reyes and Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio are filing a complaint against their National Antitrust Commission.
While Rep. Reyes and Sen. Colosio are both members of the political party Movimiento Ciudadano, they are filing this complaint as private citizens.
However, they both clearly understand the situation from a gamer/consumer perspective.
Rep. Reyes talked about how PlayStation gamers would only be able to buy their games directly from PlayStation.
“If discs disappear, anyone who owns a PlayStation will no longer be able to choose where to buy their games and will be forced to purchase them exclusively through Sony’s store,” Reyes said.
Subsequently, Sen. Colosio pointed out how local retailers, like Liverpool, Sanborns, and GamePlanet, would be harmed by this move.
This move may be a prelude to other political actions, including legislation.
Their complaint refers to this as a relative monopolistic practice that violates Mexico’s Federal Economic Competition Law.
But then again, since Mexico’s antitrust commission only started last year, this issue could show how powerful it actually is.
If Mexico does take action, it could force the EU to reexamine if they should regulate Sony as well.”

Lots of people have this response to KOSA and I can understand where they're coming from. I'm very aware how crazy the Internet can get, and I worry sometimes about what kids could be getting into online. It's no wonder that people see this stuff as a good thing.
Protecting kids and keeping them from getting into trouble online is NOT the problem here. It's HOW they're trying to do it.
KOSA would create a world where you have two choices:
1. Give social media your personal info, your face, ID, or anything else that you SHOULDN'T put on the Internet
2. Be either locked out of your account OR being given a restricted, censored Internet.
If you are queer, trans, a person who gets harassed online, or if you're in any other situation where anonymity could be keeping you safe, then THIS IS DANGEROUS.
If you have people online harassing you, threatening you, your anonymity PREVENTS those people from being able to find you. If your ID/face is in a hackable database, that info can be sold to dangerous people.
And I don't think people talk enough about how this can be dangerous to minors as well.
For one, all minors would have to give images of their face to companies. Not only that, but a lot of teens are in situations (like abuse, low income, etc.) where they have nowhere else to go if they want to find support, friends, or info that could help them through struggles or very well save their LIVES.
THOSE teens would have to choose between putting THEIR personal info online, or losing access to their friends or support forums.
But if you want to keep that privacy and safety, the only other option would be to have a restricted, censored Internet. Whether or not you're an adult. You could be locked out of accounts that you need for work, or that you need to communicate with people.
Yes, kids get into trouble online. I have heard very scary stories of how crazy the Internet can be. But I feel like we can come up with better solutions that don't put everyone (kids and adults) in more risk.

Okay, but this is really important: Bruce Springsteen occupied this really weird place in music history. His songs were all from this pessimistic, nihilistic view of an America that had let him down:

But he didn’t *sound* like a punk anarchist; he sounded like a country rock singer. When he released Born in the U.S.A. people completely misinterpreted (or possibly ignored) the lyrics in favor of the tone of the music.
Politicians used his music to promote their ‘Murica Yes! brand, and he had to literally explain that that was not what he was about. He’s over here asking when we’re going to have jobs and heathcare, not stanning the politicians who weren’t helping the people.
It was also kind of a big deal that he had an integrated band, because even as late as the 1980s music was still kind of segregated and MTV was straight up racist. They refused to play and promote black artists and then claimed that were no black artists in the first place. Michael Jackson’s record company had to threaten a boycott of their white artists to get MTV to play his Thriller video.
Plus, the first black/white interracial kiss on TV was in 1968 (OG Star Trek). Also it took us until the 70s to get sympathetic gay characters on screen, and the 90s to get gay characters to kiss onscreen. And all of those firsts were met with outrage.
So keep that in mind when you see Bruce Springsteen not just playing with an interracial band, but engaging in an interracial, gay kiss on stage repeatedly.
