I think its more that the bright happy shows completely gloss over their implications so the fandom goes wild exploring what the show didnt, and the grimdark gritty shows spend so long adressing everything and getting down into the dirt of all the characters relationships and the world they live in, that the fandom just wants to see them all happy. Its not necessarily about the fandom's treatment of other members of the fandom, and more about the type of fanworks that get created. Think: my little pony fallout equestria and the danny phantom dis/vivisection fics vs every single everyone lives/nobody dies ay fluff fic for a fandom where in canon a bunch of people do die.
