They're only canon because they are a male and female main chracter duo therefore they """must""" be together. There was zero real development, just fanservice. No development as friends into a crush into a mutual love into a relationship. Just girl like boy, girl obsessed with boy, boy like girl, boy obsessed with girl. That's it.

It all makes sense now, there was no real character development of the duo as an emerging couple, just fanservice and slapstick obsessive crush behaviour treated as development. All because the two main boy-girl duo characters HAVE to be together because boys and girls can't just be friends accorrding to tween show writers.

And that's why the queer side ships feel so much better, they actually had development as an emerging couple even if it was mostly off screen. We saw them getting closer and closer in the background. It was obvious they were friends that grew to love each other. Not just shoved together because boy has to like girl.
