Obviously there are black string players. We just don’t see them because they “don’t look like” string players.

One day when I was reading Wise Mans Fear, I walked into the dining room and one of the paper butterflies was laying on the floor under the plant and was split in half down the middle.

So I have this friend who read The Name of the Wind a while ago and her former friend used to be a big fan like me, so sometimes we talk about the series. And she brought up a point I had not considered and apparently is a common thought about the series: Kvothe’s time with Felurian made him a man. And she asked me what I thought about that, and here are my thoughts. 

So we can all agree, Kvothe’s time in the Fae world change him. He becomes more adult and even more jaded than he was, as proven by his time later spent with the Adem and the fake Edema Ruh. However, while Felurian and all that sex contributed to how he changed, I think the Ctaeth and defeating Felurian (temporarily) are what truly changed him. 

Disclaimer: I hate that people associate sex and becoming an adult. It seems quite strange and convoluted to me, but that’s not what matters here. 

The Cthaeh tells Kvothe some of the worst things in his life. It tells him how his parents died, he tells him about Denna being beaten. These truths further broke Kvothe and then he grew because of it. That was a far more impactful moment than the majority (if not all) of his time with Felurian. 

The heartbreak of what Kvothe has learned, about his parents and about Denna completely shake his word view. He may have suspected before but the Cthaeh confirmed his worst nightmares and forced him into the dark reality of his life, even more so than before. This emotional toll reworks Kvothe’s mindset, not to mention the unknown influence it has on him that we learn later from Bast. Did you ever think Kvothe might not have killed that fake Edema Ruh troupe if he hadn’t had met the Cthaeh? He might have found a more humane way of saving them without his family’s deaths so fresh in his memory. Hmmmmm… just food for thought. 

Felurian also taught him magic, fae magic. He made his shaed with her. He then learns her true name. and defeats her with magic. This shows how his intellect has grown, not just that, but how to use the knowledge he has gained, from a combination of Ben, Elodin, and Felurian. 

Kvothe now has more knowledge and power than he has ever had before and he knows how to use it. The fact that this is paired with him losing his virginity is probably more a cue to the reader that he is becoming a man, but not because of the sex, because of the Fae. And it has less to do with sex and more to do with knowledge and power.

I’m sure many people disagree with me on this, but hey, it’s personal interpretation, and that’s one of the best parts of books, right? 

Okay! Canon bi’s are at least Devi, who’s a disaster, and Deoch, who’s functional. If Savoy isn’t bi I’ll eat my shirt, and he’s decidedly distinguished. Sim’s at least curious if not flexible. Tempi’s probably bi but he’s definitely into ladies and wants to listen to Kvothe sing him sweet sweet songs.

Stanchion is our functional gay. I move to have the first row be gays/lesbians and the last row be our queers/pansexuals. Which makes Mola our disaster lesbian and Count Threpe our distinguished gay.

Sex work is nothing to be ashamed of. Arliden finds no shame in it. He doesn’t give his child undue details, but telling children that adults have sex, sometimes to make children, sometimes to have fun, and sometimes people pay other people to have sex isn’t a bad thing in any way. And teaching Kvothe to be polite to people some others would shun and treat poorly for no good reason is a good lesson.

So basically Kvothe mentions how his mom hated the meter of that song his dad used to sing sometimes, and I just read past it as a piece of storytelling.

But then the last line of that song:

“Not tally a lot less”

Wait, wait. He met his family when he was really little. Yes, Meluan also looks like his mom, but he met her when he was little. She might not have figured it out right away, but how many Kvothe’s are there in the world? With fucking bright red hair. That can play the lute just like his father did.

She knows. Not necessarily at their first meeting, but she figures it out. She might even hope he can open the Lackless box (A son to bring the blood). 

Boy sure loves his pockets.
