Australian James Brook is the Bosun on the Steve Irwin. He has been with Sea Shepherd for three years. Operation Divine Wind is his third campaign to the Southern Ocean to defend the whales. James is also a veteran of the Blue Rage campaigns and Operation Ferocious Isles to protect pilot whales in the Faeroe Islands. James was a touring musician and theatre technician.

DOLPHIN V. PORPOISE, WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Dolphins fall into 2 families: Delphinidae (oceanic dolphins), and Platanistoidea(river dolphins). Porpoises belong to the Phocoenidae family.

Dolphins have long beaks; porpoises have blunt noses.

Dolphins have conical teeth; porpoises have spade-shaped teeth.

Dolphins have a fatty structure in their foreheads that’s used in echolocation. This organ, called the melon, is largely absent in porpoises.

Porpoises have approximately triangular dorsal fins; dolphin dorsal fins have a more pronounced curve.

Dolphins live longer than porpoises.

Dolphins are more extroverted and acrobatic than porpoises.

This documentary is based on the book by journalist Charles Clover and demonstrates the frustrating truth about the world’s fishing. People seem to be under the misconception that because we can’t see the sea nothing bad is happening down there. In actual fact its a tragic mess.

I actually just read an article in this month’s BBC Wildlife that there could be less Great White Sharks than there are pandas or tigers. The global number of great whites was estimated between 3000-7000 (according to IUCN there are about 2000 giant pandas and 3000 tigers), however these statistics are now under scrutiny as a key population of the Western Cape of South Africa that was thought to number 2000 individuals has been reduced to about 500 sharks in a study by Dyer Island Conservation Trust.

When you hear all these statistics it is difficult not to feel overwhelmed. 40% of fish caught are by-catch and are thrown back into the sea, dead. Mitsibushi has a secret store of frozen blue-fin tuna, an endangered species that it continues to fish - when the death toll rings for the tuna, Mitsibushi is going to be selling some very expensive sushi.

Public pressure is the way to fix this problem. Marine reserves make up 0.6% of the world’s ocean. That means 99.6% of it can be fished. Campaign to save these reserves and to create more, but also ensure that the fish you buy is as sustainable as it can be. MSC approved products are the best option. If it doesn’t say on the packet, assume it is unsustainable and probably illegally caught. Or you could ask someone. They probably won’t know so I would suggest you assume the worst. Most fish is not sustainable. Most fish is caught illegally. Most fish is caught by huge corporations that put small local fishermen out of a livelihood. Please, just read the label.
