This is a great question! ⸜(*ˊᗜˋ*)⸝ As a fellow scaredy cat/ horror fan, I definitely have a few in mind that may fit the retro theme:

Utaho no Tatari (now has an English patch) - Some gore and chase scenes, but fairly mild horror wise

Ann - Some chasing/ gore

Yume Nikki - 100% fits this theme. Psychedelic, but not really scary

Ao Oni (absolute classic) - Some chase scenes, but def corny!

Misao (Gore heavy) and Mad Father (scary, but doable) are good too!

Ib - Another classic! I don't remember this being too scary

Alicemare - Subtle RPG maker horror

Hopefully these fit the bill! I have a list of Japanese RPG maker games I have yet to translate, but once I get through those I may make a game rec list!

After finding no other English language info/ anything on this game, I got around to translating the first two endings! I had to read the only guide in Japanese and watch a video to wrap my head around it, but I got my first video done!

Endings 3-1 are planned for one video, but that will largely depend on length.

Sometimes I start games and get so fixated on finishing them I burn myself out. This game, La Danse Macabre (ダンス・マカブル) was a handful. The difficulty level is high, but not unmanageable for my current level! What I struggled with was the actual gameplay.

Usually, I play as I translate and work things out by trial and error. In this game, there is no such thing. With two different routes leading to 5 different endings, I started to get super confused and lost.

I got so mad I had to step away, before my dumb self realized, "Hey... I speak Japanese! Why don't I watch a walkthrough in Japanese?"

Throw me in the trash.... ANYWAY, I will link who I watched and the Japanese guide I referenced (the only guide of this game, might I add) for my English walkthrough I wrote up. It was so nice to watch someone else struggle too (even if it was in Japanese, lol)! This was hard!

Expect to see my translated playthroughs out in a week or two. It'll probably be two long videos with all the endings, then a separate ending compilation video, because y'all seem to like those. After that, there'll be Hunny's lore video as usual.

ALSO, the creator has explicitly mentioned they allow patches so long as they're FREE! I will be happy to provide my translation files if someone wants to make an English patch (crediting me, ofc). Let me finish it all first before reaching out though, please. I don't want to mess with the files. My job keeps me busy enough ==;

If my Spanish isn't too rusty, I'll see what I can do about Japanese > Spanish translation, but only for my videos. Don't even think about using those in a patch if I even do it >:( (I'm rusty af)

My English walkthrough for the impatient (this needs some editing, so feel free to shout if you notice any odd parts or errors!)

I'm attempting to translate ダンス・マカブル (La Danse Macabre), and it's super interesting because it has lots of Catholic/ French imagery in it, which isn't super common in Japanese media. It's super cool too because the character portraits move around (usually only the pixel sprites do) and the art is super pretty.

It came out in 2014 (per Freem) and no one's translated it that I've seen, so I'm working on it now. I am taking a crash course in learning biblical terms in Japanese. The rest is easy enough with a dictionary!

Because this game is only available in Japanese, and the creator has explicitly allowed for translated patches of the game so long as they are available for free… I will share my translation (if I finish this project) here so someone can make the patch 😊

After translating, the last thing I want to do is go into the game files (I know how to, but I don’t want to 😮‍💨)
