physical manifestations of health bar?
did you have to use that photo for that
i mean good on them...? still paired with that image thats uh. interesting
I respect the fuck out of this. The whole site is trying its hardest to go against every selling point the dog robots have as its selling points.
The dog robots are supposed to be autonomous, threehalves is explicitly only for being piloted by a human. The giant horns make it difficult for this machine to enter through doorways, and that is the point. Coupled with the built-in weak points, it is very easy to disable this thing, so it can't be used by the police or the military effectively.
OP alluded to how unsettling the machine looks, and I believe that it was a concious decision; the robot dogs have garnered sympathy due to their apperance, which makes it easier for the police to morally justify their use. This thing? You're not gonna get many people to sympathise with it. The only people who would are monster and-or robot fuckers, and I believe these circles generally understand that a machine cannot be trusted (though of course many would willingly approach it for pervert reasons (positive) knowing full well it's a bad idea).
oh yeah i saw everyone on tiktok freaking out about "if it can't harm humans why does it come with instructions to kill it" it's a safety feature in case of an emergency or malfunction where it needs to be quickly deactivated. "why is it so big and demonic why does it look like that" it's a safety feature so it can do dangerous labor and so you don't feel bad about killing it. "it was designed not to be able to follow you through doors?? why the fuck would it do that that's scary" it's a safety feature so you can't get cornered or have the person piloting it misuse it. "it doesn't have hands but it can attach CHAINSAWS to its limbs???" it's MADE TO WITHSTAND WILDFIRES IT'S NOT GONNA USE IT ON YOU "this thing gives me such bad vibes i do not trust it" GOOD!!! IT'S A ROBOT!!! IT IS A TOOL!!! IT'S A REALLY BIG AND COMPLICATED MACHINE THAT IS DESIGNED TO GO IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENTS WHICH WOULD MEAN IT COULD POTENTIALLY MALFUNCTION! USE YOUR BRAIN!!!
admittedly i do think that picture of it standing in the doorway with glowing white eyes is like comically frightening but it's SUPPOSED to be so you don't feel bad for it or approach it

ok so i see a ton of anti-ai stuff and shaming ai users and that's fine, i'm also anti-ai, but i'm not a big fan of shame, and i've been thinking a lot about, like, what is the positive spin, how do we encourage people to do the thing themselves instead of asking the robot, and what is the thing we're worried ai will take from us if we do not nurture it in ourselves, why is that nurturing important, etc. etc.. basically i like a positive spin and trying to suss out what i am pro that makes me anti-ai
at first i was like "it's imagination," but it isn't just imagination. i can do my imagining and then still ask the robot to create it for me. no, it's specifically the act of creation, when a human being imagines something and then makes it a reality. this is the core human function that is made better and more powerful through practice. that essential practice of making the imaginary real is what you deprive your one and only miraculous human brain of when you ask the chat robot to do it for you.
stop and look around you. how much of your surroundings did not exist before a human imagined it and then made it real. unless you're out in the wilderness, probably most of it. all human made objects. food. houses. the prevalence of 90-degree angles. we live in a world that would not exist if human beings did not imagine it and then create what they imagined.
and the thing that hit me just now is that the power of any given human to imagine and then create what they imagined is the power to create what reality we all live in. we can all imagine better worlds, but there will be no better world without the practice of creation. when you use generative ai to create something for you, you do not get that practice. you do not gain greater power to shape your own reality. you give away your power to practically influence the world, and to do so from your own lived experience.
any creative will tell you the creative process is a major struggle, and i think there's a subset of ai-users who are just wannabe creatives who were never gonna be up for that struggle because they don't actually want to create, they only want the recognition of having created. there's nothing to be done about these people. but i think we also don't talk enough about the major hit to our already struggling education system (to speak specifically about america here for a sec) that was covid, and how insecurities around intellectual ability are at an all-time high, and it's worth meeting people where they are at and saying hey, i get why using this feels good, and where you are at is not your fault.
and can we do that by being pro- the act of human creation. like can we get some good propaganda going for the struggle and failures and triumphs of creating something you imagined. how do we get people excited about that. how do we make the creative struggle sexy again. i mean, i truly believe that making the imaginary real is a magical power and lots and lots of practice makes you a powerful magician but idk how convincing that is. don't give up your magic! create it yourself!
this encapsulates a lot of how I feel about craft, specifically fiber arts because that's what I'm most comfortable with, but it applies to almost every hobby where you make physical objects.
because something that happens to me every time I start a hobby like that is I start to notice problems that could be solved with my new ability to Make A Thing about it.
we had a drafty window so I sewed a big tube of fabric and filled it with polyfill so I could set it on top of the window sash. my wife's lunch bag was falling apart but she couldn't find another one that was the right size so I measured it and sewed her a new one with the same dimensions. my hands get very cold at work but I still need to type on a keyboard so I knit myself fingerless handwarmers. I'm sure if I got into ceramics or woodworking I would go absolutely mad with power over the ability to make specific objects.
and sure, I could have just bought most of those things. but they wouldn't have been as nice because they wouldn't have been tailored to solve my very specific problems. nice wool sweaters are so expensive to buy, and usually they look pretty boring, or they're itchy, and they don't last very long. hand-knit sweaters are a dream in comparison. you have total creative control over them.
there are a lot of arbitrary distinctions between what counts as Art and what counts as "crafts." but for me, they are the same. writing in particular follows that same process of "hm I wish this existed, but I don't think it does. I guess I will make it??" and it's definitely easier when other people are interested and supportive of what I'm doing, but in the end I'm solving a problem for myself.
so yeah! it's a joy to make things. and I think if someone is getting really in their head about writing, or visual art, or music, or any of the other things that people are trying to tell you will be done entirely by AI in the future, then they should step back from Art™ and try some crafts, because it feels really really good to solve a problem by making a thing, even if the problem is just a drafty window.
One thing to note: when you are *not* creating things you’re not just not-getting-better, you’re getting worse.
In D&D terms, the longer you go without doing things the more of a hit you take on capability. You lose levels because you haven’t practiced
So you might make it to a Level 20 Web Designer, but if you start handing the work off to minions coworkers or AI you’re going to take a hit. That’s fine if it’s because you’ve moved to management and you don’t need those skills every day. Less fine if it’s literally your career.
I've always written everything by hand before typing. Staring at a blank word document doesn't inspire the words to come.
But a blank paper and a blue pen and the words come at a steady pace.
As traditional handwriting is progressively being replaced by digital devices, it is essential to investigate the implications for the human
aaaand here's a link to the paper :)
Dammit but if I write as fast as I think nobody can read it
Dang it Beans you get back here and say that out loud!!!
Nothing funnier than having a 20 minute crashout about how much you hate your job and then continuing with your day. I hope hunter-gatherers did this midway through tracking their lunch.
#genuinely because like if we were always like this then maybe it will be okay #and life isnt uniquely horrible now
@daftpatience
Ask anyone who’s been battling the birds and the squirrels how berry season has been (especially when they’re at the bushes) and you’ll get a word by word recreation of Neolithic crash outs.
Can you hear the people sing?
"how to stop them from happening again" <- have you tried not putting up flock cameras? just a thought
Almost like if constant surveillance results in destruction of the surveillance cameras maybe no surveillance will leave the people nothing to destroy?
Clearly surveillance doesn’t work or you’d know who took your cameras bro

i beat myself up for not knowing enough about my special interests a lot but then i remember the average person off the street has no idea what the carboniferous is and i feel better
are you really bad at it or are you in "good at it" spaces
"are you really bad at it or are you in 'good at it' spaces" has derailed so much self-hate since I read it
this is a load bearing sentence in my psyche and I can't believe it's only 2 months old
shout out to the public library of the city where i live, that has many ebooks in german that my husband can borrow for a very cheap yearly contribution, and yall have no idea how much my husband reads

Okay, but consider this...
Modern fantasy creatures and people being exposed to new lifestyles and developing dreams and goals that don’t fit with their species or their culture in the slightest.
A dwarf who was born in a mine, grew up in a mine, and can count the number of times they’ve been surface-side on both hands. One of these times, they witnessed an airshow. They go home and tell their parents: “Mom, Dad, I want to be a pilot.” “What’s a pilot?” “We’ll, y’see…” And a brief explanation later… “YOU WANT TO DO WHAT? WHERE DID WE GO WRONG? DAMN IT, ROK, I TOLD YOU THAT THE SUN WOULD GO TO HIS HEAD. NOW HE THINKS HE CAN FUCKING FLY, THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!
An elf who has a deep interest in geology and underground exploration signs up for a dwarven digging mission. Shows up first day all long limbs and being seven feet tall, and has to become a 90 degree angle to get through the door. “Hey guys! Who’s ready to look at some rocks? Am I right? Well, it’s a tight fit, but I bet I can do it if I squeeze. Ooh, I know some great digging songs by the way.” The dwarves immediately try to find a way to fire the elf without being sued for racial discrimination. “I told you we should have been more careful about the ad.” “I put in it Gold and Gems Monthly, Brek, how was I to know elves read that kind of thing?” “OHMIGOSH, GUYS COME SEE WHAT I FOUND!” “Your turn, Nik.” “I swear to God, if it’s another goddamn stalagmite again…”
A centaur whose herd migrates to a coast area and sees the ocean for the first time. “Greyhoof, I’m going to be a fisherman.” “What?” “I’m going to sail the seven seas; I want to be a sailor.” “Blackmane, you’re half horse, you can’t sail.” “I can learn.” “You can’t climb their weird ropes things. What would you even do on the ocean?” “It’s called rigging and I’d be a fisherman, obviously, like I told you.” “YOU’RE A CENTAUR, YOU CAN’T SAIL!” “YOU DON’T KNOW THAT. DON’T TRY AND DESTROY MY DREAMS, GREYHOOF, I CAN DO ANYTHING I SET MY MIND TO. I BELIEVE IN ME.”
A mermaid who gets really interested in those land mountains that touch the clouds and meets an extreme mountain-climber on the beach, then decides they’ve found their calling. “I’m going to be the first mermaid to climb Mount Everest.” “What? Bluefins, that’s ridiculous.” “No, no, I’m gonna do it.” “You can’t breathe air.” “I’ll bring a tank of water, like what the humans do with air when they dive.” “YOU DON’T HAVE LEGS.” “I know, that’s what’ll make me the first mermaid to do it. I’m going to have to work around that, but” “FOR FUCK’S SAKE, BLUEFINS. WE’RE TROPICAL.” “No, see, there are these human things called coats. I’ve got it all figured out. Look, I drew plans.” “WITH WHAT?”
This speaks to me today.
Pursue your dreams.
You leave Captain Carrot alone! If he wants to fly you let him be a pilot!
All of these sound like Discworld books and I am all for it
I'm sorry but vaccines are so fucking cool. You're telling me that I just need to drop by my doctor, feel a pinprick, maaaybe feel a bit off for a day and then I have statistically significant, incredible chances of either completely avoiding getting a certain illness or at the very least have a pretty string guarantee my body will kick its ass swiftly??? Fucking magic potion.
