Kingsley sat up more, this time just ignore the pain in his side. “Ree -- was there --” he cleared his throat, wishing the memories of what had happened would come back complete. “Was there anyone else involved?”

“You were in a damn car accident.”

“Do you not remember?”

"I --” Kingsley frowned. The memories from the last few hours were coming back to him in flashes of lights and noises. “Not really.”

“You’re such a moron!”

“Ree,” Kingsley murmured as he tried to sit up, but the wince that came with the pain in his side caused him to stay down. “What happened?”

As he blinked the room around him came into focus - a hospital - and he knew he wasn’t alone. “What happened?” 

“Bye.”

Kingsley cleared his throat as if he wanted to say more. But he decided against it, raising his hand in a half-arsed wave before leaving the coffee shop. He’d have to find a new place, he thought to himself, looking back over his shoulder to look into the coffee shop before he rounded the corner.

Elaine nodded slowly, pressing her lips together. None of it made sense, and she couldn’t even fathom how they stumbled into this reality. Married? She wanted to say something, although she couldn’t figure out the right words. 

“Uh, I’m gonna --” Kingsley cleared his throat, gesturing over him shoulder with his free hand. “I’ve got to get to work, so --”

“Wait.” She paused to inhale, then exhale sharply. “Please just tell me if I made it all up in my head.”

Kingsley frowned, turning back on his heel when he heard Elaine talking again. “Ah --” Kingsley frowned, hesitating his answer. “Nah. Don’t think so.”

Elaine inhaled sharply. “I feel like an idiot,” she said quietly—barely audible. 

“Last I checked, married is married.”

“ -- Yeah.”

Elaine paused, feeling her breath weigh heavier with every passing moment. “Are you… Are you married?

“Ah --” Kingsley took a moment, tapping his coffee cup with his non-ringed hand. “I -- technically, I s’pose.”
