I’m not often a Richard sympathiser, but a moment that I find so sad is his mother writing to him to tell him she’s turned his room into a sewing room and sold all of the furniture. He’s only 19 when this happens! When I first read the book I was younger than 19, so while I found this moment sad, I don’t think I fully understood just how young he was, but now I’m a few years past that age, I think my god, a baby being kicked out of home by his own mother. He kept a photo of her in his dictionary by the word ‘mother’ and she basically told him “don’t come home”
