I really don't understand people whose kneejerk reaction to someone being awkward/strange in a social situation is to interpret it as a malicious act. In fact I assume that most behavior that comes off as malicious or antisocial is actually intermediate to advanced social awkwardness. I feel like so much of what we interpret as malicious social behavior is actually just total misunderstanding. If your metric for goodness is how much you relate/understand somebody's life immediately after meeting them, how much of the world seems evil to you?

i DO believe that a good writer can make mischaracterization work. oh there's a character who doesn't normally cry? figure it out!! disect the character. make the situation cryable for them. make that character cry ugly tears even if it goes against their very nature. YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK!!!

A great piece of advice I've seen is "Don't fixate about what the character would never do. Think about the circumstances that would drive them to do this, even if they wouldn't normally."
