are shows and movies allowed to be subtle and ambiguous anymore..... is that still allowed or does everything have to be a patronizing hand holding session. just wondering

they should invent a term for shipping were I don't think they should be in a romantic relationship however I believe they are each others parasite and separating them is not an option

the other great thing about riku is like. he is experiencing a crushing amount of guilt and going through utter misery in endgame kh1. but he is reaping what he has sown. he did in fact do a whole lot of utterly awful stuff, past the point of even being able to plausibly say ‘well his heart was in the right place’ or ‘he did what anyone would have done.’ no, he was a villain. he made some terrible choices that can’t be handwaved away even by his age or relationships or circumstances. his evil was real but so is his sincere regret and repentance. and that’s beautiful to me because it feels increasingly rare. it’s always either an evil character with a slipshod redemption or it’s someone who’s not really that guilty beating themselves up a whole bunch. but riku dove headfirst into the darkness and took his loved ones with him and then in his effort to do good developed a severe case of tunnel vision and just really got way too comfortable treating everyone else badly and then he made a deal with the devil and got his life ripped away from him and had to watch sora sacrifice his own life to be kairi’s hero after all and . yeah. honestly even a fraction of that misery would be enough to stoke a change of heart in him but they absolutely put him through the wringer and it clearly ends up working as far as driving his sincerest repentance

rlly fascinating phenomenon to me is when a character is extremely popular, and that popularity seems understandable enough because they've got something interesting going on, and then you look at the fandom and realize 99% of their fans don't actually care about engaging with any of the things that make them interesting and instead seem to be fans of an imaginary milquetoast version that exists solely for ship and/or angst content and is so far removed from the canon character they might as well be an unrelated OC at this point

i think the key difference between george lucas’s star wars and disney’s star wars is that lucas is a man with an ideology. someone with a point of view, and all that entails. which comes with ideas of revolution, anti-imperialism, challenging the status quo, cultural appropriation and racist stereotypes. complex and contradictory ideas because that’s how artists are: complex and complicated people. disney is not. disney is a corporation. a corporation can’t have ideology, because ideology defeats the purpose of profit. and when the only thing you do is to turn on the movie manufacturing machine before you sit down and plan what ideas are you trying to convey to the audience, then your results are going to be washed out corporate garbage. and because when you’re a giant corporation who only cares about selling to the widest audience possible, you can’t take sides. you can’t decide on an idea. because you want to sell your product to people who are on the entire political spectrum. which results in movies without ideology, without purpose, without soul.

I have been looking for this post for years after I came across it and it’s finally here and I need to reblog this because it is absolutely and entirely accurate.
