My concern with visitor research
I’m absolutely LOVING Liz Ogbu’s keynote here at #MCN2015, but one thing is coming up in the Twitter backchannel that I’m having a hard time processing. Ogbu is emphasizing the importance of systemic research, and understanding how all of the various “cogs” of a community work together. Translating this onto museums, this would involve research at the community/city level and understanding what role (if any) your museum might play there. The problem is that almost all of our research (necessarily) involves study of that small segment of a given population that has already made a decision to visit your museum. In a way, I worry that the people we study the most actually tell us the least about what role a museum should play in a community.
