Randomly remembering how it's actually kind of funny how as far as my family was concerned, it was "nobody cares about how you look" when I was the one who didn't like the way I looked, but "you can't go outside looking like that, people will judge us all" when my family were the ones who didn't like the way I looked.

When we were children, my sister had private music lessons at her violin teacher’s house. I only visited there once, but I still remember that afternoon. The teacher had an artificial pond in her yard, a large beautiful thing with lily pads and plant life. And in the pond, there were goldfish. I had never seen such enormous goldfish.
I spent several minutes just staring at them (and trying to convince them to bite my fingers.) When my sister’s violin lesson ended, her teacher came out to the yard and explained that these goldfish were the same small creatures that were often unfortunately sold in plastic bags at state fairs. They were only about two inches long apiece, when she bought them and put them in the new, empty pond. In essence, they were like every goldfish I had seen before, but they had been given a much larger, much richer environment in which to flourish. As a result, they had grown into some of the most remarkable, vibrant creatures my twelve-year-old self had ever met with. All because of a pond.
Funny what lessons children remember. My sister doesn’t play the violin anymore, but that was the first time I caught a glimpse of the overwhelming extent to which it matters, the way the world treats us.
Reblogged again for this drawing I made for it

There are many reasons why machine generated content is plaguing the internet right now, but one we should take note of is that most people use the internet with a smartphone.
Now I'm not blaming you, or any ordinary user for that. This is not a 'phones bad' post. This is a post about the redistribution of computing.
More people have access to the internet now than in the past, that's true. But while the processing power of a modern smartphone is greater than whole desktop computers of past decades, its use as a terminal comparatively sucks:
It's harder to compose/edit text, code, and data on a cell phone than it is on a laptop or desktop computer.
Using dedicated applications meant for creating visual and audio content is harder than on a desktop or laptop computer.
Switching between multiple programs the way somebody with a project would need to isn't convenient.
Phones as terminals are mostly optimized to browse with minimal interaction.
This is great in some ways for those who own that internet. Cloud computing, gaming, storage, mean that instead of owning significant hardware, software, or memory yourself you'll pay a company over time to own it for you, and that company will also benefit from everything you do entrust to their servers.
In other ways, this is a disaster. Expensive infrastructure facilitates web access for more users than ever before and the majority of them are completely passive. The "1% rule" has been true for a long time, but it's no longer voluntary: many users now do not have the interface to meaningfully interact with what they're paying to access even if they wanted to.
Machine-Generated content is just the next step that actually harnesses this redistribution of computing. Accessing more cloud services becomes the answer to your crappy phone's limitations. Typing in a prompt is pretty much the limit of ordinary human patience with a small touch screen. ChatGPT and other services are clearly being styled as a replacement for being able to do anything else, because most people can't with the kind of terminal they use.
it's actually so crazy how much the simpsons would fucking suck if it didn't have any of the simpsons characters. just a bunch of shots of empty houses and streets for half an hour while nothing happens. that would be so badddd lol
yeah that tends to happen when you remove characters from media. without characters its all just background. i guess movies set in scenic locations would still land as kinda nature docs but even then
it only happens with the simpsons
this same criticism could be applied to nearly any media ever.
it's just the simpsons. are you a troll?
Dragon's right, if you remove all the Simpsons characters from Death Note it hardly changes anything

I just wanted to add this quote from the peppermint patty peanuts wiki page about Charles M. Schulz and his relationship with his gay cousin. The source here leads to a book that I did not read but the original source is Schulz's wife who confirmed this in an interview. If I can find the interview again I will link it here but uh. just in case someone tries to claim Schulz was a homophobe on this post again.
