what’s the dumbest thing you’ve been told when someone finds out you’re diabetic?

Had a guy today telling me that honey is great with helping diabetes.

For the third time I said “I’m type 1 so it would spike my blood sugar.” He goes, “oh no! Use it in some hot tea, and then check your blood, it won’t effect it!”

“No, it would still raise my blood sugar. I don’t produce any of my own insulin. I have to take insulin for everything I eat. If I didn’t take any insulin and didn’t eat at all I would still have high blood sugar just from hormones because I have none of my own insulin.”

It finally started sinking in and he says, “oh, you must have the bad kind.”

but my depression is so strong and my urges to lose weight have been really intense that it’s so hard to make myself actually get up and take the insulin

yeah okay, so you have a chronic illness because your immune system freaked out a little and destroyed some important cells.

it’s rough, but there are some things to do that can help with it:

set alarms on your phone for set injections / change overs. missing injections can make you feel rough later so try to remember them

drinking regularly might mean that you go to the toilet more, but it will help to dilute your blood if your sugars are high

make jokes! not the tasteless ‘i’ll get 5 types of diabetes from this’ but make good jokes like ‘i’m so alpha that my beta cells gave up.’ joking about it can help
