When the last of Damia's appointments had hastily exited her chamber, she sighed and slouched on her throne. Her tendrils, which had been teased out and undulating as she addressed the clearly terrified clients, finally relaxed. She stood, and brushed them back with her hands. With a flick of her wrist, the main entrance to her lair sealed with a low rumble. After a beat of silence, a quiet voice called out. "Damia?" Aradel stepped into view from a tunnel that led further into the mountain. "The others are here, and ready to give their reports." The gorgon pinched the bridge of her nose. "Reports, yes." She slowly trudged over to the passage. "In regards to the cult and the Order," she said, more to herself than to Aradel. Damia brushed past her agent, stopping for a moment. "I have not yet forgiven you for going to Sadal Suud against my wishes. The cult knows who you are now, and...that you are important to me. You must be more cautious." Damia glanced her way, but Aradel merely looked at her feet, and followed Damia into the next chamber. Inside the dimly lit room, the walls of the cavern were lined with more of Damia's possessions. A simple round table with four seats was in the center. Seated was an amphin, with his arms folded. When Damia and Aradel entered, his posture improved. "Lady Damia," he said in greeting. From the side of the chamber came a raspy grunt. Traq sat perched among Damia's meticulously placed trinkets and treasures. As she walked by, she gave him a swift slap on the top of his head with one of her tendrils. "You will sit in a chair or on the floor. Nowhere else," she scolded. The imp grumbled, and jumped down to the nearest seat. Aradel pulled out a chair for Damia before taking her own seat. "Thank you," Damia said quietly. "And thank you all for coming, yes," she said, raising her voice. "All of you have findings to present to me, but seeing how complicated the issue of the Cult of Xathrid and Order of Admonition has become, I have called you all here at the same time. First, regarding the Order. Aviturus? You escorted the Cardinal to safety, yes?" The amphin raised his head, looking towards her. “I did, Lady Damia. To the safe house near Redstone Pass. We met with Cassim there, who will be taking Saul to Sunari. It's where he felt he'd be safest. Advice from the fox, apparently." "Sound advice," said Damia. "If his account of the Order's actions is at all accurate, we may need to act further." "Was their prophet murdering Savyna not enough?" Traq growled. The trinkets in the room rattled, and Damia's eyes gained a crimson glow. Under the table, Aradel's hand shot to Damia's knee, intending to calm her. The imp's expression remained unchanged though he shifted in place, and his eyes looked in any direction but his master's. "Make no mistake," Damia said in a low, harsh tone. "Elymas will absolutely pay for his crimes. If the travelers do not end him themselves, I will personally see to his demise." The rattling ceased just as a mounted dish fell to the ground and shattered. Aradel's hand slowly moved away. "But. The cult is a greater concern to all of Shandalar at the moment. As much as it pains me, Elymas will have to wait for the death he deserves." Aradel looked at Damia with concern, but no one spoke for several moments. Damia broke the silence when it seemed no one else dared to. “What became of Savyna was...Unfortunately, her mind was tampered with. All I could gather from her final thoughts was that the obelisk in the Eloren Wilds is central to the cult’s plans. Aradel...I believe you have more to say on this matter.” Aradel stumbled over her first words. “Um, yes, yes I do. In investigating the sites of the cult sacrifices, we determined that the center of them was the city Sadal Suud. Once there, a number of other agents and I found a similar obelisk underground. From the description given to me by the kitsune, the runes on both structures match.” “And you believe that these obelisks are connected in some way?” asked Damia. “Yes. The cult rituals seem to be located around the structure in Sadal Suud, but from what you learned from...Savyna...the cult is focused on the Eloren obelisk.” “It sounds to me like they’re magically bound,” said Aviturus. “Is there any indication to the end goal?” “The twins go on about summoning Xathrid all the time,” Traq muttered. Damia silenced the others with a wave of her hand. “We must hope that it is not the case, yes. But regardless, the cult’s goal cannot be a good thing. Aradel, focus your efforts now on finding Zuleika. Her rituals must be stopped.” “Yes, Da...Lady Damia,” said Aradel. “I will make it my top priority.” “Second. Behind your own safety. I do not need to lose anyone else.” Damia exhaled heavily, her tendrils rustling anxiously. “Well,” Traq stood in his seat, his eyeline still even with everyone else. “I don’t know where Zuleika is now, but I can tell you where she’ll be soon. In Lesh, meeting the twins again.” “And how do you know this?” Damia asked dubiously. “I’ve been sticking around those two for a while. And she always comes back after a ritual. Those spike things she uses in them, know what I’m talking about? The twins make them. Some kind of demonic power.” Traq sat back down, his demeanor relaxed again. “So she’ll be in Lesh soon.” Damia leaned in. “I see. And she has met with Gog and Magog before each ritual, yes?” “Yeah,” said Traq, picking at his teeth. “All four times.” “Four!? Four rituals?” Aradel interjected. “Yeah, four,” replied Traq, taken aback. “She’s done one in Lesh, Naos, Khatru, and An-Karras.” “We were unaware of the ritual in Khatru,” said Damia grimly. “Aviturus. The map, please.” The amphin reached into his satchel and produced a map of the continent. On it, the locations of Lesh, Naos, and An-Karras had been marked. With a pen, he made the same mark on the city of Khatru. Damia stood, and paced around the table, her gaze focused on the map. She closed her eyes, and rubbed her forehead. “Traq. Put your cult insignia on the table,” she said, now rubbing her eyelids. The imp obeyed, tossing a cloth patch bearing a five-pointed star next to the map. The gorgon stared at the two items, then spoke without averting her gaze. “Aradel. How many sides did the obelisk in Sadal Suud have?” Aradel swallowed hard. “Five.” Damia traced the cult insignia with her finger, and a glowing blue replica appeared in her hand. She placed it on the map, with the points of the star falling on the ritual sites. In the center of the star sat Sadal Suud. “The final point rests on Sarmahl,” she said with a dour tone. “All of you, prepare yourselves. We must stop Zuleika before she can complete her final ritual.” The three agents stood, each bearing a different expression. Traq grinned, Aviturus frowned, and Aradel looked at Damia with worry. “We are all going to Lesh.”
