I met an acquaintance by chance on the street yesterday and she was holding a copy of Grey by E.L.James in her hands. You can all assume that the first thing I told her was that there are way better books out there. And she agreed with me. But she also told me that Fifty Shades of Grey was the first book she ever bought and that after reading it, she kept going, she kept reading - it awakened the passion of reading in her and I think this is something we often overlook when we criticize certain books. That they can mean something to someone, that they can elicit a chance in a person, because they’re exactly the kind of book that person was looking for. This is why I’m always insisting that everyone should read the books that they enjoy, regardless of how they’re seen by other people. A book can change a person’s life.
