So I was doing some research on house Mormont and I kind of stumbled across an idea that while I'm sure isn't original was new to me. Bare in mind (bear) that this is all conjecture with no hard evidence, but there are some neat points that link up that it's at least a fun theory.
Mormont women, possibly secondborn daughters (hard to say with only two actual evidence points) at some point are sent out or send themselves out to find men to sire children with, who are then brought back to the household to be raised as Mormonts. The idea has a few things that make it at least a distant possibility:
Maege Mormont, secondborn, younger sister of Jeor, has multiple children. They're strongly implied to be illegitimate. No one seems to know who their father is, and Maege herself won't say. She simply tells people she slept with a bear, and that's how they were born. Is it possible she got married and kept it a secret? Yes, but to what end? How does seemingly NO ONE know who her secret husband is? And, despite the fact that all her daughters have no clear father, all bare the surname Mormont. They are regarded as legitimate in that regard, even though there's no evidence they are and a strong belief that they're not.
Alysane Mormont, her daughter, also has two children who have no known father. She tells Asha as much, in their exchange. And there's also this curious part of their exchange in A Dance with Dragons, chapter 42:"I have a son. He's only two. My daughter's nine." "You started young." "Too young. But better that than wait too late." A stab at me, Asha thought, but let it be. "You are wed." "No my children were fathered by a bear. Mormont women are skinchangers. We turn into bears and find mates in the woods. Everyone knows." As the second born daughter, there's no reason Alysane should feel she has to run off an have children- especially to have children with no known father, and yet there's an implication that she has to have them sooner rather than later- why? What drives her forward when she could have requested her mother marry her off? There's also the echoing of the motif of a Mormont bearwife
The Mormont motif of a bearwife isn't just a thing they say- it's actual iconography they use. In a Storm of Swords, circa page 630 US paperback, Dacey describes a carving above the gate on Bear Isle. "There's a carving on our gate," said Dacey. "A woman in a bearskin, with a child in one arm suckling at her breast. In the other hand she holds a battleaxe. She's no proper lady, that one, but I have always loved her." The Mormont bearwife is important enough to be above the gate that's the entrance to their keep, and again, this is one of those things that COULD simply be because Mormont woman have to occupy a space unique to Westeros- but it could also be a wink and a nod to the women in the family who take things into their own hands, and bring forth children that have the Mormont name, despite their lack of fathers
society if people treated daeron the drunkens's unknightliness and "cowardly" aversion to tourneys as similar to sam being whipped into his father's notion of a westerosi Man instead of--oh who am i kidding people dont even talk about sam
God, I do hope that little Dexter misinterpreted what George said or is straight up just trolling when he said George told him Dunk survives Summerhall because I just don't think it's good writing. I'm gonna quote my fellow Discord member Snails here about Dunk's Summerhall-presumed death:
"it's a very poignant image, frankly, of Dunk setting a laboring Rhaella down and then rolling onto his back in the evening grass, looking up at the stars while the world burns and he tries to find the strength to go back and look for Egg. 'The luck is ours alone.'" To add to that, this beauty of an ending where Dunk has one last look at the stars that have sort of defined his journey, after performing this act of saving a woman. A return to the beginning of his journey starting by saving Tanselle, but not in a bad way. I also just find that any theory that's spinning off of Dunk surviving is reliant on a lot of wild leaps of faith- this man is nearly seven feet tall, in his sixties, and one of the most recognizable men in the kingdom. He didn't run off and secretly join the Night's Watch. What would the narrative purpose of him being Coldhands be? How does all of it tie in THEMATICALLY? Things don't just happen because they're /cool/ in GRRM's world, they happen for a reason, and that's the thing- I have yet to see a good theory that has an actual reason beyond 'I think it would be neat.'
Knight Duties by La Draws
[Art of a Black knight, shown in profile from the knees up. He is wearing full armor with his shield and helmet strapped to his back. His hair is close-cropped. He’s standing next to a white horse who has their head lowered. The knight looks serious and determined. ]

the world might be a huge dragon egg right
I love Daeron Targaryen so much, I just want to stick his head in my lap and softly pet his hair and also give him a juicebox
The Realm's Delight
There are a few historical characters in ASOIAF who we know very little about beyond the fact that they had some disability and it is so frustrating how some people will basically completely ignore that to construct weird 'what if narratives' that just disregard the ONE thing we know about them, and get reallll pissy when disabled people point out, 'hey, doing this isn't cool.'

PRINCESS ALYSSA TARGARYEN
I think a lot of people are already misinterpreting the new GRRM interview. It's not so much that he's lost interest in ending the series- it's about the expectations and the weight that's been put on him because when he started the books, everything looked very different- and then they exploded, there were multiple TV shows, they became a cultural phenomena, and the idea of catching up on that has become this whole separate beast, this albatross that he has to contend with. He can no longer write the books just for himself, essentially- there are so many, many people out there and they all want and expect different things, and he /doesn't/ want to release something that doesn't meet those expectations or doesn't have full effort behind him, but that gets more and more difficult, and it's become this ouroboros of difficulty and also people are standing on the sidelines and constantly telling him he's about to die.
Latest grrm interview is a rough read
