went to the movie theater, for the first time in years, to see odyssey
why is nolan so bad at some core little things of movie making? actors turn wooden in his movies, and he's bad at showing action and like forgets to show important little shots to guide the eye towards important things.
i feel like hitchcock would give him a dressing down.. "chris as one yankified brit to another, you have to tell them via SHOWING... also, you need more blondes in mortal peril... i mean blonde women, chris"
a long time ago i riffed on someone talking about the "game of the decarde" (probably referring to minecraft) and i tried to name games of the other decades lol.
i remember for the 70s i chose pinball, because the ball is like the indelible perfect unit, the godly ego bouncing around a garish world of experiences thirsty for more more more before death.
i still think i was cooking with that one
(cw csa mention)
did i forget, or did i never know, that steve albini was a CSA-porn-enjoyer? ^ i think my heart just got 3 sizes more conservative.
i guess i'm just glad he had nothing to do with slint's "spiderland"

critical support from cis women in my time of crisis
reading matt bruenig tweets makes me hate chart-boys even more, because he'll point out the ways metrics (especially averages) lie, like:
in covid the average wage of the poorest workers went up, but just because lots of the cheapest workers were laid off
in the inflation spike afterwards, it looked like poor people got wealthier, but a large percentage of that was the value of their cars, which is not really a gain that they can realize, like "what's the value of everything you've got if you just liquified your whole position uwu" is maybe is not the best pov.
part of me likes the display of knowledge but another part of me thinks it is damning of the whole endeavor of like 538 technocratic pundrity and guys who want to win arguments with FRED charts as if what is being presented is simple and unassailable.
it's all Freakonomics' fault.
idk I just think it's funny and a good excuse to play with formatting cards in html/css which i also find amusing.
and i like to imagine Clyde from Every Which Way But Loose partnered up with these guys.
on mefi fanfare i went to the sheep detectives thread sharpening my knives; it was full of people who LOVED it, and also expressing confusion abt why people are calling it a children's movie.
while saying why i hated it, i said maybe it's giving children's movie because it's "silly, sexless, shallow, and safe" and i'm proud of that i think it's fair and also a bullseye.
this is part of my feelings about "coziness" which are too boring to unpack, but i both like cozy and i despise cozy so it's got churn in my brain. i think i hate "cozy mysteries" though; miss marple did not pose as a maid in a house of vile killers just so lazy actors could loaf about in synthetic englandslop (or newyorkslop, only murdersin the building i see you) diddling the tropes.
anyway they usually delete personal attacks on mefi fanfare, so i don't know if it provoked any haters. my experience though is that people who think that fanfare (and like art appreciation in general?) is a safe space, a hugbox, a place where yums shall never be yucked -- they have a lot of problems with the idea that someone can just honestly dislike something, and ironically they turn VERY nasty, VERY quickly, then in the end after trying hard to establish that *you* are the outsider freak and *they* are the normal soul, they will accuse you of doing it for clout DGMW i am not trolling, i hate trolls and provocateurs and their shitty garbage ass mindset persona that i am aping using confessing to but it's not me i swear!!!; i consume product / appreciate art with an open mind and a sincere heart and express myself honestly. i give things their shot, i offer up the pudding of my mind to their artistic manipulations to do with me as they will. the sheep detectives made me laugh a little and cry a little but it's just half-assed in its heart, there's something weirdly deeply shoddy about it.
before catgirls* there were cat aliens, like larry niven's kzin, and they made it into traveler TTRPG (as the 'aslan' lmao) and you can still see them on the cover of twilight imperium sold today in "stores". the idea of cat-people in space is just a part of a certain crusty SF tradition.
i've always found them to be pretty dumb. [[ though, i didn't mind the kzin, because i imagined them like feral tortoros, feline bugbears - not the stupid-looking magisterial literally-lions; but i only read the ringworld books not any kzin war shit or wev no sorry i was too busy reading piers anthony thinking about that glass mountain where you can make a wish at the top ]]
does anyone LIKE the cats in space? are they just there as filler when you need a non-glup-shitto alien race? they evoke egyptian-ness but i mean kzin were just orcs/klingons/mongol type honor brutes iirc, and in modern times idk from the art they are giving "proud".
*i remember in like 1988 reading an "alarums and excursions" fanzine, from who-knows-what-year, it was just in some random nook of a shitty hobby/military enthusiast/november kelly jilloff zone store mostly full of WW2 kit, a full-on nazi uniform right there when you walk in, but it deigned to sell games to little fucking brats like me out of its back room, and i grabbed this sloppy A&E issue on a whim, and in it was a session report involving a female cat person set in a fantasy japan, so weeby catgirls are probably older than civilization.

this artist, for this game, goes infinitely hard
it's pretty standard for space games (i'm talking about board games but it applies to the computer games too) to involve flying around, hauling cargo, hauling contraband, doing little missions, upgrading your ship a little bit, etc.
i was realizing this is just truckin'
and now i want to retheme one of these games as Smokey and the Bandit.. i want this rump-70s flavor car culture shit so bad lol.
guy who watches I saw the tv glow and thinks it’s very powerful and abt how screens damage you eg make you trans
I said that Starmer accomplished his mission of destroying the left and preserving neoliberalism and someone on MetaFilter flew off the handle at me like I was talking fairies and moonbeams.
I thought it was pretty standard take!
$1.3k for the steam cube thing is a sick joke

i did take a theology class in college. my main takeaways were:
They are trying real real hard to separate religion from superstition and magic, which I think is not as bright of a line as they think, like I wasn't allowed to say it might be magic-plus, or organized-magic, even if i went to catholic school for a year and i had a guest priest teacher tell the class straight-faced he saw an older priest, a very holy admirable man, throw his scapular into stormy seas, and they calmed but yeah this is serious stuff not dirty magic right.
Absolute heartbreak: because of my handwriting, my 'a' looks a little like my 'e' (about as much as they do on your screen rn), and so in a paper about prayer he "corrected" every 'a' I wrote in the word pray (and only there), like a dozen times, as if he thought I didn't know how to spell 'pray', as if he didn't see how 'a' was spelled like that in every other word, and it fucking crushed my ego to be thought below average at a state university somehow.
yeah sex is good but have you ever command-A set font->Roboto Serif?
