“eren…dinner’s getting cold.” he heard the voice of his best friend, and somewhat lover, mikasa, call out to him, but he simply stayed silent. still staring at the gleaming, rough, shiny moon he stares at every night. at the same time. mikasa sighs, watching the cool air form a steam of smoke from her lips, disappearing into the air. “i’ll be back,” she looks back inside at armin, who’s sipping his soup and he simply nods.
she steps out the little wooden house, softly closing the door behind her to not alarm the dogs resting. her soft footsteps are heard, the light crunch of the grass ringing throughout eren’s ears. she folds her long, pink, silk sweater and takes a seat next to eren. she looks down at the cold water from the lake before looking at him. he simply blinked, staring at the moon. there’s a long uncomfortable silence. “i know they’re out there, mika.” he simply says, ending it at that.
“it..” she hesitates to speak a bit, the sound of her light gulp the only thing breaking the silence. “it’s been nine years, eren.” she sighs and eren blinks from the moon, looking down at the water. when he looks to his reflection, all he sees is his ten year old self. dirty, bloody, and tears welled up in his little eyes. he shakes his head and looks back up to the moon. “i’ll find them, i swear—i’ll find them.” his voice starts to break and mikasa looks at him again.
his long hair almost coming out of the lazy ponytail it was lazily thrown into, and strands of hair covering his beautiful soft, but mean green eyes filled with tears. he was broken, and mikasa was scared. scared that one day he’ll leave. scared that one day he’ll actually find you. scared that one day he won’t come back. that fear kept her up at night. when he slept beside her, he never held her. she always held him. the silent sounds of his cries kept them both up.
it made her cry herself, she hated seeing him like this. she knows it’ll never stop either. he was connected to you, connected deeper than blood and family itself. he really did love you, and he really was gonna find you.

“‘morning, eren.” mikasa smiled warmly at the tall man, walking over to hand him a cup of coffee she had already made for him. “slept well?” armin asked, biting into a crispy waffle. “yeah, you?” eren sipped the coffee, looking at him. “eh, it was cold.” armin says and they all softly laugh. “ah, you got a letter this morning. came in around six .. six-thirty.” mikasa walked over to the counter, picking up a little white envelope with a moon stamp on the top right corner.
she was a bit hesitant to give him the letter. the moon, for eren, she pieced it together instantly. it had to have been from you, or someone who knows about you and eren. she was going to throw it away—she couldn’t lose eren. he was the best thing that’s ever happened to her. even if it was a little complicated. but, you were important to eren. you were his soulmate, you guys were connected.
“here.” she handed it to him and his heart dropped as soon as he saw it. he put down his cup and immediately walked past mikasa, to his shared room, closing the door behind him. she sighed and closed her eyes. she was preparing for this day, the day you would find him—or he would find you. “mikasa..” armin gulped. “i thought i had more time.” she tried to blink away tears that were forming in her eyes.
armin stood up, opening his arms for mikasa and she immediately crashed against him, silently crying into his shirt. meanwhile, in eren’s room, he was reading the letter. his back was against the door, his teardrops falling onto the letter, slightly smudging the words. he read slowly, and throughly, not believing what he was seeing.
— “ i want to see you again. no, i need to see you again.”
that sentence made his eyes light up. this was the day he was waiting for since the day he lost you. but, his heart dropped reading his next sentence.
— “ but, don’t throw anything good you have away for me. please.”
he shook his head, squeezing the tears out of his eyes. his threw the letter onto his bed, grabbing his suitcase out the closet. after a while, mikasa slowly made her way to the door, pressing the side of her face against the door, seeing what she could hear. the sound of zipping and rustling is all she heard. her eyes widened and she immediately swung the door open, pausing in place. eren paused too.
she saw his puffy red eyes looking at her and she looked to the clothes he was messily throwing into a suitcase. a suitcase he was gonna use when they were gonna go on a cruise next month. he watched as she breathed heavily, looking at him in disbelief. “you’re chasing something old, eren!” she yells out but he shakes his head and continues to pack his clothes. “you- you have life here! with me, with armin! you’re really going to give us up?! for them?!” tears uncontrollably stream down her face. the dogs get up, growling at the noise.
armin stands from the hallway, around the corner, listening. listening to his best friend cry and plead for the love of her life to stop. to stay. and he won’t listen. it breaks his heart and he can’t help but start to cry too. he leaves from the corner and walks outside, sighing. he walks over to the lake eren’s always at, sitting right next to his spot. maybe, just maybe, if he walks out the door, eren will see him and decide to sit next to armin. decide to stay.
“you don’t fucking understand, mikasa.” eren doesn’t look at her anymore, moving clothes aside to make space for more. “i do! you need to let them go..you have me, you have armin. you have us! we’re here for you and you’ll get over this..!” she walks over to him. “we’ll get you therapy—” “therapy?! is that what i need?!” eren raises his voice and mikasa stops in her tracks. “they’ve been there for me when i was beaten, when i was bullied, when i was..” he stays quiet.
“and i couldn’t even be there for them. yet, they still reached out to me. they found me.” he glared at the short-haired woman, looking down on her. looking as tears poured from her eyes. “mikasa, since i’ve met you and armin…i told you about what happened. i told you that i’ll never sleep until i found them. they’re what i need. i don’t…i don’t think i can fully survive without them.” he cleared his throat, but his voice was still raspy and tired.
mikasa stayed silent. he was right. she basically signed up for this when they met. “one day, i’ll see you again.” he zipped up his suitcase, pulling it off the bed. “you promise?” her voice breaks as she looks down at the wooden floor. “..i can’t.” all she sees is his feet walking past her, out the door, the suitcase following. he put on his shoes, and walked out the door, leaving the little wooden house, and softly closing the door so he doesn’t disturb the dogs.
the sun was beaming, and armin looked back to see eren walking off, away from the house. “hey!” he yelled out, his heart beating fast. eren hesitated to stop, but he did, and he looked over at armin. “come sit with me?” armin yelled out again, but eren stayed silent. he could see eren was thinking about for a split second, but he simply shook his head and said,
“make sure the moon looks nice tonight for me, okay?”
before walking to the gate, and leaving.
