from Chaimaa Boukharsa, a decolonial activist and scholar in Islamic and Arabic studies. she also is the co-founder of AFROCOLECTIVA, an afrofeminist, antiracist and panafricanist collective.
translation (once again by the wonderful @dykeologies):
What’s happening in Ceuta has a lot to do with Sánchez (Spanish left-wing PM) visiting Algeria.
This wouldn’t be the first time that Morocco uses immigrating people to politically extort Spain. They already did it in 2021, when Spain received Brahim Ghali, from Frente Polisario, and Morocco opened its border with Ceuta letting thousands of people pass.
And this also must be understood within the alliance between Trump, Netanyahu, and Morocco. Morocco is a strategic ally in the zionist project in the region and uses the border as a tool for political pressure.
And another thing that seems important to me. These types of tragedies don’t just serve to pressure diplomatically. They also generate a climate of uncertainty, racism, islamophobia, and anti-Moorish hatred. And who capitalizes politically from this climate? The right and the far-right.
It doesn’t seem like a coincidence to me that this is happening at the doorstep of the general elections. Because the more the debate shifts towards migration, security, and Islamophobia, the more a right-wing political project is strengthened, a project that is also deeply aligned with the zionist policies of the Israeli government.
Those who lead the European right today are also some of the biggest international supporters of zionism.
The Moroccan government and the Spanish and European right are allies that work for the zionist project.
And Morocco does the dirty work. When it receive millions of euros to outsource European borders, it persecutes, represses, and kills migrants to prevent them from crossing. But when it wants to pressure Spain, it shows that it can open the border when it’s of interest.
As I said at the end, those who pay the price are always the same, migrants, used as bargaining chips in a geopolitical game much bigger than themselves.

My dear, THEY are the Dawn
“This is the season,” co-showrunner Patrick McKay confirms to Empire, “where Sauron makes the One Ring in the volcano.” Charlie Vickers’ menacing Sauron is no longer in disguise, done with lurking in the shadows. And as he gets on with the business of corrupting Men, Elves, Orcs, and anyone else who steps his way, the stakes of The Rings Of Power are raising considerably. “We have a full-on villain this season, in a way that was quite different before,” says McKay’s fellow co-showrunner J.D. Payne. Sauron’s emergence “changes the tone of the show,” McKay adds. “This third season is darker, more dangerous. No-one is safe.”
For Vickers himself (pictured in the exclusive image above as Sauron, in his stronghold Barad-dûr) the chance to enact such a core moment in the Legendarium was not taken lightly. “The first day I walked onto that set, I cried,” he tells Empire. “What an amazing privilege and honour to be able to tell that story.” The forging of the scene was as epic as the forging of the Ring itself. “We were doing the Ring across two weeks, because the sequence is so long,” says Vickers. The result is, McKay promises, “the single most ambitious, technically challenging sequence we’ve ever done on the show. Charlie’s performance is absolutely staggering. We never could have prepared for it.”
“The first two seasons were all about building out this world,” says McKay. “But throughout that time, we’re lighting all these fuses and setting all these stories in motion. The third season is when all those bombs are starting to explode.” Sauron’s time is coming.
The Middle-earth drama is about explode in its upcoming season – with Charlie Vickers' villain plunging things into darkness. Read more at E

there's a running theme in asoiaf of loving parents understandably privileging the lives of their highborn children. cersei, as imperfect as she is, is a loving parent. this is why both catelyn and ned, who are also loving parents, are able to empathize with her. while praying to the seven, catelyn wonders to herself if she would do any less for her own, and when ned places both himself and catelyn in cersei's shoes, he is unable to say they wouldnt do the same as her. they get cersei, they understand where she's coming from
tyrion does not get it. at the battle of the blackwater, he's unable to foresee cersei pulling joffrey away from the fighting and unable to understand why she would do such a thing. he didnt consider that a parent would make short-sighted tactical errors out of love for their child because he's never had a parent who would do that for him
that's not to say cersei, catelyn, and ned being loving parents who would do anything for their children is a good thing. it makes them sympathetic, it makes them realistic, it makes them very, very human. but it's not a good thing that these people with immense political power and responsibility, whose every action has ripple effects on the entire realm, dont prioritize that realm first and foremost. it's not a good thing that the lives of highborn children are privileged above the lives of the smallfolk, adults and children alike
this is why i like to think of dany as a foil to these characters. dany's motherhood disrupts this hierarchy because unlike cersei, catelyn, and ned, her children whom she prioritizes are the lowborn, the enslaved, and freedmen. missandei calls her "mother to us all." the freedmen call her mother in all their different mothertongues: mhysa, maela, aelalla, qathei, tato. throughout ADWD, we see dany genuinely think of her subjects as her children even within her own mind and she sacrifices and compromises herself again and again for them. because she'd do anything for her children the way cersei, catelyn, and ned would do anything for theirs
and this is getting more into headcanon/spectulative territory, but i also like to think of dany as an embodiment of the mother above. in fact, i think all three of the seven's female faces—the innocent maiden, the merciful mother who loves all her children, the highborn and low, and the wise crone whose lantern guides people in the dark—are meant to mirror her narrative role and character arc.
i searched all of AGOT for any mentions of the seven's female aspects, the maiden, mother, and crone, and there werent any as far as i could tell, but i did find these:
the word crone comes up a lot in dany's chapters to refer to the widows of the dosh khaleen, which she fears will be her future. and by her final AGOT chapter, she's come to terms with her fate and reclaimed it: yesterday she was a child (a maiden), today she is a woman (a mother), tomorrow she will be old (a crone). i almost want to say george added the concept of the maiden, mother, and crone (the triple goddess associated with the phases of the moon, just as dany is the child of three and associated with the moon, which married the sun and gave birth to dragons) to the subsequent books because of dany.
but i digress, my main point here is that dany's motherhood is deeply entwined with the themes of this book and the arcs of characters on an entirely different continent and it's really fascinating to read how this thematic tension between parenthood and ruling is subverted in her chapters and chew on how these background fictional religions echo the political, human foreground of the story

Reasons to boycott Nolan's The Odyssey (that I know of so far):
They shot in the illegally occupied Western Sahara as reported by Middle East Eye (thanks to @fuckyeahdavidandyonatan for bringing that up)
They dumped their props into a protected area of the Italian sea after shooting (thanks to @godslop for finding the article in English)
Zendaya wearing looted 3000 years old Iranian earrings for the premiere of the movie + having her stylist fly on a private jet just to get her a dress for the premiere in London
No Greek actors in a movie about Greek heritage
While people mentioned that Anne Hathaway was flown in to the set every day, apparently it was not on a private jet but on a helicopter that was being used anyway to fly in equipment.
None of these things are new in Hollywood or exclusive to the Odyssey, its director or its actors, but I do think we as audience should start holding Hollywood accountable when it disrespects our culture, heritage, environment, especially when it's movies that are this big and have a huge budged that would allow for more conscious choices.
Please do add anything else I missed.
“Galadriel was a penitent: in her youth a leader in the rebellion against the Valar (the angelic guardians). At the end of the First Age she proudly refused forgiveness or permission to return. She was pardoned because of her resistance to the final and overwhelming temptation to take the Ring for herself.”

not to add to your pile of requests, but i would love to see a larger picture of your salgant! love your work!!
I think he gets a bad rep. Salgant always appeared to me like chill compassionate guy that was a little bit of a coward. Not the worst mixture. He seems like a guy that's good with children and pleasant company at a feast.

For anyone wondering, the PhD student's name is Myra Cheng.
Here's a link to an article about the study from the Stanford Report: link.
Across three preregistered studies, participants interacting with sycophantic AI became more convinced of their own rightness and less willing to repair relationships. Yet at the same time, participants rated sycophantic AI models as higher quality, more trustworthy, and more desirable for future use, which may explain why this behavior has persisted despite its harmful impacts.
