Self portrait, 8x8in acrylic on canvas.
The final two drawings of my trip. The first being the skeletons of a pair of conjoined twins, possibly the piece I spent longest on as I really wanted to get it right and take down every bone and detail, and a skull from the main anatomy collection, marked lightly in pencil, presumably by one of the Vroliks, with the symbol for female and 15y, expressing the gender and age of the deceased.
Further studies from the Vrolik, this time of a section of a face cut away to reveal the details of the tear ducts and a much faster study of the inner workings of the hand and wrist’s tendons.
The first two sketches from my drawing trip to the Museum Vrolik, Amsterdam UMC. Their anatomical and pathological specimens form one of the most fascinating collections I have ever visited, and it was a joy to be able to spend a full week there to sketch. The first study is a bisected child’s skull with the brain removed to reveal the cranial cavity, forming a sort of anatomical Victorian cameo appearance, and the second is a head with half the skin removed, thought to be made to show anatomy students the relation of the skin to the skull and the thickness of the tissue around it.
A little tiny vole painting, for a gift.
