A āmodernā trope on technologyās role in social isolation from xkcd
Class trip to library
My graduate seminar visited the downtown/central location of Seattle's public library this morning. Several interesting points were made about the role of technology in processes of teaching and learning. Hereās a highlighted list:
I was most impressed by a staff comment about technology's role in personalizing learning rather than standardizing it. I found this purpose for technology to be counter to the industrial purpose ofĀ āinnovationā to replace humans or make the work we do more standard and efficient. Are these uses actually opposite or just nuances in a wide array of tech?
I was also interested to hear about the libraryās stance on mobility and "exploding the container" model of teaching and learning. Libraries, and this one is no exception, find ambitious ways of extending their reach so that access to information doesn't rely on a person being physically present in the building. This work -- an expansive model of teaching and learning -- requires a lot of community engagement and being responsive to a variety of needs that come from working with diverse publics.
Finally, the aesthetic qualities of learning are not just visible in the library space, but tangible as well. As a space for learning, the library is impressive and creates a sense of place that promotes self-respect and attention to being better than ones self. The design of the space provokes a sense of improvement. The attention to and pride in the aesthetic quality of a learning environment was in sharp contrast to the physical structures, especially internally, of some public schools that are unable to pay attention to this aspect of the learning experience.
