Soviet animation recs. Part 1/???
@jackymedan asked for some recs and now nothing can stop me! I LOVE Soviet animation, it was the thing that shaped my childhood, formed my sense of humour and filled my head with its quotes forever.
Untill the 1980s very rare foreign cartoons were dubbed and shown in the USSR, so, the industry had to fill the gap. People older than me basically watched only Soviet cartoons with rare exceptions of Czechoslovakian ones and the like. I grew up in the 1990s and we had many foreign cartoons broadcasting as well, but the basis was Soviet.
When I grew up I rediscovered Soviet animation and its psychedelic side. Many artists restricted by the regime started making cartoons because they were not as censored as other arts. There’s a very well developped ‘dark side’ of Soviet animation, but let’s leave it for another time.
Today I’ll give you links to cartoons I loved as a child. Only those available with English subtitles, of course.
Winnie the Pooh - Part 1, 2, 3.1, 3.2
Based on tales by A.A. Milne, very cute and funny. No Christopher Robin or Tigger though. Maybe because it has only three episodes.
Crocodile Gena and Cheburashka - all parts in one video.
One of the best known Soviet cartoons. Story of an unlikely friendship happened in the Moscow zoo. Cheburashka is not based on a real animal. Vasiliy Livanov who voiced Crocodile Gena is also known as the actor who played Sherlock Holmes in the Soviet adaptation.
The Mystery of the Third Planet - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

In Soviet Russia they didn’t have Disney. They had this. A very beautiful cartoon, one of many others.
