Why Sports Infrastructure Matters in Boarding Schools
The moment a parent begins to consider a boarding school for their children, academics, safety, and the overall hostel life are what usually come to mind. And rightfully so. But there is another factor that is paramount when considering a childâs personality development, health, and well-being, and that is sports.
Not just sports as an act of playing, but the entire setup around it. The grounds, the equipment, the coaches, and the general sporting infrastructure in a boarding school will be the difference between a child killing time and a child finding a passion for the rest of their life.
More Than Just a Game
If you ask any child about their school days, theyâll hardly remember a math or a history lecture; what theyâll surely remember are the games they played in the afternoon, the sports tournament that they played in the rain, the winning shot they made!
Sports activities at school arenât just about spending energy. They are something much more, and teach the children things that no books can. While playing a team sport, a child learns teamwork without being lectured on what it means. They experience failure in losing a match. They learn discipline, time management, and the importance of practice.
But all these are possible only if the school has good sports facilities, in the case of boarding schools.
Why Infrastructure Matters
Think about the boy or girl who just loves swimming, but finds the school swimming pool out of use. Think about the boy or girl who just loves playing tennis, but finds the tennis courts not up to standard. What is the result? Their enthusiasm is ruined, and they spend their days indoors, losing all the qualities which sport is capable of developing in their physical and mental beings.
Good sports infrastructure in boarding schools does three important things:
1. It Creates Opportunity
If the facilities are available in a school (well-kept grounds, required equipment, competent coaches, etc.), kids are given the opportunity to find themselves sport-wise. Some kid whoâs never held a badminton racket finds out he has a hidden talent. Some kids find their niche on the cricket pitch. If such a facility is unavailable, this cannot be known.
2. It Builds Confidence
There is an extra joy derived from playing in a quality field with appropriate equipment. Children will feel valued. They will be assured that what they are doing is worth it. Having a well-cared-for basketball court or football field sends the message to the children, âYou matter; your game matters tooâ.
3. It Promotes Safety
This is a significant issue. Faulty facilities lead to injury, so damage to the track, terrible field conditions, or outdated equipment can result in an accident that may affect a child for life. Today, sports facilities in boarding schools use state-of-the-art equipment that allows for safe exercise. This in itself should reassure parents.
