The Journey of my Artwork

A book of sketches

With all the drawings that I did for the Boconno project. I wanted to create a sketchbook or bind them together. However, as I was researching how to bind them I decided to create this piece of work.

Creating a paper scene inside a tin was a bit of a challenge, I tested different thicknesses and papers to see which one was more resistant, as well as different types of glue. However, the main problem was the number of layers and the distance between them in other to create deeps but at the same time not be too busy.

I also created different molds of tins with different casting materials so I could open and close them so it was easy to build the scene. However, the meaning of the tin is lost if I can cast it.

The people and the landscape make a place. This is the idea behind {always with Us} where I look to old places and try to find out if they are still the same and if this is not the case, I try to recreate how they looked like 50 or 60 years ago. Also, the people who are not anonymous but they were integral parts of the town are now remembered in this series.

Narration is the way we build autobiographic memory. We also, tell those stories to other people and embellish them to create a more compelling narrative. These new stories are now part of our own story. [In a Dream] is a project based on memories, not mine but others. I used archive pictures to create a visual narrative based on the experience of others and with this create new memories.

It is Not a Dream: Exhibition

I have been writing the description for this piece and how I am going to present it to people but this is a very slow process. I also wanted to create at least a couple of more pieces to be together on the wall but this requires a lot of work. However, this is where I am right now and it looks really nice so far.

It is not a dream

It is a new project that was conceived while working on the exhibition. I still working on the tins but I have slowed it down a bit because of the exhibition and I started to work on this project.

It is Not a Dream: Exhibition

I have been working on this exhibition for more than 6 months. I have done a bit of cyanotype but not enough to create a piece but this is the perfect combination for the work I did last year and the textile research I have been doing for the past 3 years.

What it means?

{Sea} was created last year as a wait to evoke my family's immigration history, being the sea the main protagonist in the separation of our family. The Voronoi express the representation of the space between us. It subdivides space and I feel that represents migrants from Venezuela around the world On the other hand, embroidery is the connection between my grandmother and me. The time that we spent together created an authentic bond of love and care for each other, even when we were separated.

I used her book to guide me through the embroidery process, unfortunately it was as nice as I wanted. (for more, see the post for the research).

Exhibition

This is my first time presenting my work in an exhibition. it was nice and the work with the curator was incredibly nurturing for my work. I love the work that she did and how she used a common space and transformed it into a gallery.

Hiné Mizushima

Her work is really inpaering I was interesting on the vintahe stile of her presentation that is similar or closer to my interest. The level of detail is quite facinating.

It is incredible to see her work. The level of detail is truly incredible, making each piece a story. She also has a wonderful way of constructing her work and presenting it. I also want to add that her Instagram and Behand page is a wonderful way to present her work and create a magnificent portfolio.

Emily Botelho

Emily's work is fantastic but the reason I look into her is because wrote a book on how to create abstract art with embroidery, so she also taught how to create the work. I found her work to be incredible, the texture is fantastic and I love the way it is presented. Her book has been useful but it is very specific for her style but help me to understand how to use embroidery for art. I am thinking of adding beads and metal for my last project.

Reseach 7.1: Concha martinez Barreto

When the Day Ends was an interesting exhibition that brought back the idea of a work of art that covers the past and the present creating a narrative. In her case, she works with difficult topics in this project. 

Note: There was a part of the exhibition where there was a hidden message, I could not read it properly but it was very interesting to communicate indirectly with the viewer. I felt connected with the idea. It was quite fascinating. 

"These acts of memory that are the paintings of Concha Martínez Barreto reach us easily, because they put us in that space in which each of us will have found ourselves or find ourselves. I'm talking about the existential questions: Who are we? What are we looking for? What will remain of us? What does it mean?" (Vaccani, 2021)

It is easy to agree with the idea that old pictures seem familiar to us, like Vaccani said we might be part of them. However, the question is why we feel closer to events that are not part of us. I guess this is part of our collective memory is driving the memory, the feelings and the recognition force
