Then there's a hard cut to another kind of image. These are mostly drawings from pulp and men's adventure magazines. In one, a loinclothed African carries off a swooning white woman in a torn red dress with a stylishly nipped waist. In another, a black "tribal" with a ring in his nose waves a severed white head and menaces a wide-eyed platinum blonde. There are a bunch of these. And unlike the horrible specificity of the photographs, they're all broadly the same. Black men throwing white women over their shoulders, or trussing them between carrying poles like deer carcasses. They're all an articulation of the same chauvinism, the same barely-sublimated erotic impulse.

I've read thousands of pages about the visual imagination of colonialism. There is so much to say about these images, and vital decades of academic work have dug deeper than I ever could. But when I saw this sequence for the first time, the contrast between the two series of images was so immediate, so ugly, that the aesthetic and contextual analysis part of my brain just shorted out for a few seconds. I just sort of sat there and looked at the actual wages of white imperial masculinity, paired with its pathetic, self-aggrandizing, gooner anxieties.
