he looks at you and smiles, says that you look like anĀ ocean, that your hands feel like the shore heās desperately swimming for. you will remember those words for years to come even if he does not. good. remember the power of the sea. remember poseidon. remember tsunamis, floods, volcanos erupting underwater. the ocean is in your blood. you are ferocious. nothing can ever wash you away - not even yourself. remember that.
Darshana Suresh, "for those with seawater lips" (via mythaelogy)
In Greek mythology, the Nereids are sea nymphs, the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris, sisters to Nerites. They were distinct from the Sirens. They often accompany Poseidon, the god of the sea, and can be friendly and helpful to sailors fighting perilous storms. (source)
"Thank you, Kali," he says, and his tone is more gentle. Ā "Things are going to be just fine. Ā Have I failed you yet?"
She did not answer, and his softened tone did nothing to comfort her. She was livid, and it was obvious, but she would be there on the ship in the morning, and the day after, and the one after that...and she would be there again when they set sail. Her loyalty was a hard line, a point of honor for a woman banished to a honorless world. She would be here until the sea claimed her life back from his command.

Everyone knows sailors tell the best stories ā and every word of them true, of course. Come share a story or two with your fellow Lionās Arch denizens, whether outlandish, sorrowful, frightening or just plain entertaining. Thereās no prize beyond accolades, but there is free booze and free food prepared by the Mesmerizer's chef, Kvigr Oxkin! This is a recurring event open to all of our LA friends, scheduled for every 2nd Friday. Hope to see you there!

Twice this week, sheās walked up to her crew and friends gathered about a bonfire, and been the storm to smother the flames. Ā Twice this week, she has watched the gleam of drunken cheer in their eyes fade beneath the sharp judgement in her own. Ā She isnāt like them, not in this; they mourn with excess, and she mourns with anger. Ā Iollan is lost, and hungry seas delay them from going to his rescue; she can calm the waves enough to get them there, but the conditions are wildly unsafe outside of her reach, and she cannot protect two ships at once. Ā Des is still screaming and upset on the Mesmerizer, enough so that Iludhraās had to move her out of the Captainās cabin and deeper into the ship, to keep her from disturbing people so much.
Twice this week, sheās walked up to her crew and friends gathered about a bonfire and felt like an intruder, with Jay and Kali and Ruby settled comfortably against men as if they were perfectly content couples and she some thunderhead come to force them to take their happiness elsewhere. Ā The Captain bought out my weekend,Ā the dancer had purred the first time; the second, Iludhra watched her Captainās hungry, lecherous gaze slither over the Elonian women as they performed a sinuous dance for the appreciative crowd.
āKali, Captain?" Iludhra whispered to him, and she meant it as a reminder ā you would be unhappy with yourself in the morning ā but perhaps it came out as a reprimand. Ā She is not the gatekeeper of his indulgences; she is his friend, and ultimately, his subordinate.Ā
But sheās rarely felt the latter as heavily as when she turned her back on them, and walked away.
I have been unlike myself of late, or perhaps more truthfully, I have been more myself than I was before. When the ocean takes a Drifter, we do not mourn in the way that many do. We honor their life by seizing hold of our own. We celebrate and we sing and we dance and we love...we live.
I keep watching Iollan leap from the rigging, a track set to loop in the shadows of my mind. I was untouched by the sirens' song, even as so many others fell helplessly to it...and I do not believe that it marks me stronger. I am simply already trapped in the song of another, and I will follow him blindly to the bottom of the sea.
He has never looked at me before the way that he did last night, as though I was finally the woman he wanted. I flirted shamelessly. I sang for him and I danced for him, and I knew it was reckless even before Lu settled her judgement upon me.Ā I knew it was a mistake. I knew it was only the liquor and the firelight and the need to dash red hair from his mind. I would have chased that mistake to the dawn, though. I would have drowned myself in our mistake.
I did not leave to save myself. I know he will never love me; I know that my heart has anchored itself to a lost cause - and that my Captain, much like everything else I love - will always sail just out of reach. I know that his regret would have hurt, but no matter what came after, a life in which I have known his touch - even once, even drunk, even as his mistake - is still the life I would choose. I did not leave to save myself. I left to save him from my own selfish suicide.

I had to get over [him]. For months now, a stone had been sitting on my heart. Iād shed a lot of tears over [him], lost a lot of sleep, eaten a lot of cake batter. Somehow, I had to move on. [Life] would be hell if I didnāt shake loose from the grip he had on my heart. I most definitely didnāt want to keep feeling this way, alone in a love affair meant for two. Even if heād felt like The One. Even if Iād always thought weād end up together. Even if he still had a choke chain on my heart.
