In retrospect, it’s refreshing to see how playful we were at the beginning of our career. And to know we still are - after so many years in business!

Some different colour schemes for the "Fun In The Tub" animation.

The diver & the frog (line test)
Two guys, one tub
The next animation we did was the result of a random evening at the Zozoville Gallery. You know, fart jokes & stuff like that.
The clip is case study of some sort. Two guys sitting in a bath tub. The rest is history. This time I designed my own characters.
Here is the entire project in our archive.
Chameleon eyes test
Zozoville Freakshelter (unfinished)
The second idea was inspired by the weirdness of the Zozoville monsters: a short walk through the gallery - through the eyes of a monster with three eyes moving separately like those of a chameleon.
We made a quick test with our camera, but watching it gave you such a headache that we gave up on the project.
This morning I've found five dusty sketchbooks from 2006 in a drawer. In the first one were a few more scribbles & ideas for the *LIVE animation:
#1 was the first brainstorm. Seeing this, I'm quite glad we changed the story line. "Mother Earth" taken literally (NSFW).
#2 was a homage to Monty Python's "Meaning Of Life" Yorkshire scene. Outch!

number one: portrait of a monster in a t-shirt
This might be the first time I show this test animation in public :) Today that would look different. And it would be HD. Measured in "computer years" 2006 was still stone age ...
That's my version of Johan's painting. Not very satisfying - too clean & flat. Fail!
This is Johan's painting I picked for the first animation test.

Zozoville Animation Test 1
When Johan & Mateo opened the Zozoville Gallery in my area, I was literally stunned by their art and became a big fan immediately. I went there often and we talked, drank tea or just sat there drawing.
Their monsters are predestined to be turned into animations, since every single painting tells a little story. I started with a few small animation tests, but soon figured out the only way to do it right involves 3D. Otherwise it's impossible to do justice to the rich textures of the unique Zozoville painting style. Their art is not polished, the way Johan & Mateo use acrylics is rather rugged - as are their collage or wooden backgrounds.
I agree with steve. I don’t see how the winner won- the project was suppose to be about motion– I feel that stills don’t convey that at all- plus it was the easiest to execute out of all the entries. Also, the winner and 3rd runner up look like projects that were previously completed and the artists just slapped a 55 logo at the end. I probably liked the runner up the most, there was some actual 3D and 2D work happening- plus the story was tailored to the project. the second runner up was crap.

In my opinion…. The first one (winner) was weak. Conceptually it had little meat, and no originality. Design wise is was not impressive and technically it was probably the easiest one to execute of the 4. The second one was well done in all areas. Pretty funny, good message, conveyed well. Original execution and pretty nice design.
