OTG // Off The Grid by Rashid Hadee x Thaione Davis // promo4
OTG // Off The Grid by Rashid Hadee x Thaione Davis https://culturepower45.bandcamp.com/a⦠Some of the best moments in life are often not recorded. Some of our most beloved memories are lacking documentation. Some of the most powerful conversations are without even a single word spoken. We have lost hundreds of beats, ideas, and rhythms, but somehow they seem to always return in some shape or fashion. In practice, it is said that we journey OFF THE GRID hoping to help them find their way back. We are currently OTG. When my good brother, Thaione Davis, reached out to me about creating this instrumental album, I immediately fell in love with the idea. Itās been a while since Iāve released some new music. Loopy Fiasco is my only other instrumental release and I dropped that back in 2017. I put my side of Off The Grid together with my newborn son laying in my arms and made sure every track had his approval. He definitely was an A&R on this one in his own way with his facial expressions. Iād look at his reactions in the studio to the sounds coming out of the monitors as pure as pure can get, since he was only four months old at the time. We listened and tweaked each track until I felt satisfied with the vibe. My goal was to bring people into a different environment through the music and use this album to take their mind to another place. Even if itās just for a moment. Iām feeling very blessed at this point in my life and this album will be like a time capsule for these moments. I am very thankful and I look forward to you enjoying our art for years to come. PEACE -Rashid Hadee ā- The relationship between a Virgo and a Scorpio is something different. We built different. We move with different curve. Complete opposites in many respects, yet in tune with a syncopated harmony not often understood. When paired together, what we offer to each other is a balance built on a signature foundation. There is a level of respect, both spoken and unspoken, that we share for each other which is unquestionable. Me and Rashid been 100 grand out the gate! Since day 1, no days off. As you move thru the years, the circle tends to shift rightfully soā¦there are only a few who I personally revere. Either itās earned or burned. Simple shit. The fact that at any moment, we can nerd out on audio shit has always been a plus because we keep each otherās sword sharp and very well maintained. For those that know us personally, it is not surprising that we might go āoff the gridā at random. Nothing personal, just an elusive character trait that we share. Currently occupied. Unavailable for discussion. Grinding and growing behind the curtain and out of the spotlight. We built different. We move with a different curve. Catch us if you can. -Thaione Davis credits released September 1, 2023 Produced, Engineered, Arranged by Rashid Hadee for 2nd Life Recordings Hadeeās 2nd Life (ASCAP) and Thaione Davis for Davis International / Emanuelleās Theme Music (ASCAP) Artwork by Congo Square Design Grp. Kwame Safo talks to Marc Mac, Bryan Gee, DJ Flight and Junior Tomlin about the futuristic Black art form and why its Black roots should neve
an excerpt:
Jungle as a sound still exists today. The original proponents still fight and preserve its legacy via labels like Reinforced run by Marc Mac and stations such as Kool FM (now known as Kool London). The drum ānā bass derivative has been a lot more popular though. Popular being defined by its spread in the market space and the frequency of events labelled as ādrum ānā bassā compared to the weight of jungle events which typically marked its strongest years between 1993-1995. The successes of drum ānā bass were also not distributed as evenly to the era of jungle and meant Black contributors did not benefit in the transition, as they were left behind in the ārebrandā. Black women have rarely found a āsafe spaceā in the music industry to not only articulate themselves unapologetically but to also be appreciated and recognised for their endeavours. The intersection of racism and misogyny, coined by queer Black feminist Moya Bailey as misogynoir is an everpresent attribute of the gentrification of most Black music scenes. As DJ Flight tells us: āI'm constantly feeling like I'm trying to justify my existence. What do I need to do to get recognition? It almost feels like Iām being erased in real timeā. Lessons and the education of future makers of jungle in regards to the genreās context is important in order to improve on past mistakes that the industry has made in failing to create and uphold spaces for Black innovators to communicate art. The future of jungle, and all Black music, should include Blackness from its roots all the way to its packaging for a wider, global audience.
