A river. Light. A feeling as though I am going somewhere good, where life sparkles. I did a quick check on my album progress today and was surprised to find I have almost 5 tracks complete and 2 more about half way done or thereabouts. 7 tracks is not all that far off an album! And ... the best thing ... this is not the album I thought it was going to be ... it is better than that. It really is.
I am truly excited about my work for the first time in a long time. Hence why I am back on here.
I also feel it is possible again. Also why I am back on here.
I must try to remember that, slow though it may be, I am making progress. I am quietly proud of myself right now.
“When someone walks around a bend in the river, the Pirahã say that the person has not simply gone away but xibipíío—‘gone out of experience. They use the same phrase when a candle flame flickers. The light ‘goes in and out of experience.’ ”
— Daniel Everett, best known for his study of the Amazon Basin’s Pirahã people and their language
Rivers and candles behaving like poems. This makes me happy. It makes me even happier now that I went ahead and added the sound of a candle flickering to Polaris. It all makes sense sometimes ... artistic sense that is ... I am not sure I will ever truly make ‘sense’ of my brother’s death.
So what would it look like? A bridge that ‘was built by my own desire to heal.’
Well ... I think my bridge would look like this.
This is the bridge I build for myself when I have the courage to do my work.
Without my work this bridge does not exist. It will never exist. I will never go here. I will never open my door and walk along it holding a mug of coffee and a biscuit and singing something good.
Please. I don’t know what is in the way of me doing my work. I want to move past it. Somehow I have to hang on to that want, to that desire and make something out of it. Everything is at stake. Everything. Everyday.
Nobody will protect you from your suffering. You can't cry it away or eat it away or starve it away or walk it away or punch it away or even therapy it away. It's just there, and you have to survive it. You have to endure it. You have to live through it and love it and move on and be better for it and run as far as you can in the direction of your best and happiest dreams across the bridge that was built by your own desire to heal.

Just recorded myself lighting a candle to go with the first lines of ‘Polaris’.
The sound of the candle spitting sounded so good I decided to loop it through the intro and get rid of the shakers.
Now the beginning has much more air in it; it has much more atmosphere and much more stillness.
Perhaps it is sadder .... perhaps not .... perhaps it doesn’t matter.
The song exists in a real place now. Perhaps that is what really matters.
Storm ~ By Ben Messina
Working (finally) on the last sections of Polaris.
The strings coming through the storm. Mixing the darkness and the light into just the right consistency for the song.
I cannot believe how close I am to finishing this ... although the moment I write that, I hope I haven’t cursed myself.
Keep on going. Step by step. Editing, editing, editing.
Edit until every tiny thing is absolutely a deliberate decision. Until every sound on the song comes in and leaves properly. Until I know there will be no regrets. Until I know it is done.

I can feel something happening ... I am beginning to live again.
I am feeling things that are not pain and loss.
I am starting to work again. I think I might even want to perform again.
I think I can sing again.
The clouds are lifting. I am not broken.
I am still alive. I am happy to be alive.
Sunshine. I feel it.
The pain passes, but the beauty remains.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir explaining why he still painted when his hands were twisted with arthritis. (via stellanympha)
Ok. I am too full of grief and pain and fear to step up and get the lead vocals on Polaris done.
Have come here looking for something to talk me into it.
And I found this.
If Renoir can paint through pain and into beauty then I can sing the same path.
This is going to be an exceptionally hard vocal. But I will try. I will try and try until it is done.
Then what will remain of the pain and struggle will be the song - the beauty.
When the night comes, I float into my dreams. And suddenly the world is beautiful and everything feels like it will be alright.
Just discovered this artist ... my word is she good. Spent ages on her blog wrapped up in colour and wonder.
I am a bit stuck with Polaris. Have done a few things that are on the list and it is sounding much better but ... am very tired ... and needed to look at something amazing so I came here.
That is definitely what tumblr is for.
This is just what I am trying to do with the second section of polaris. This kind of perspective. This kind of atmosphere. This is exactly it.
This reminds me I am trying to do something good.

Tea and milk (by juliasvanqvist)
A cup of tea (or two) later and have done the list of all the things I need or might want to do to Polaris.
Here goes:
Do I actually want to light a real candle at the beginning and record that? Seems like a damn fine idea. Might sound great or it might just sound plain spooky. Worth a try though.
Really need to look in some detail at the percussion and loops I have. I think the shakers might be making the loops a bit messy. Am not even sure I like the loops all that much. I might see if I can’t find something a bit better than what I have. They don’t excite me all that much.
All the vocals need redoing. Damn. And it’s going to be hard work to do cold northern vocals when the sun is streaming in and it’s boiling hot at the mic.
Something else is perhaps needed over the second section where the guitar comes in. Not sure what. Strings maybe. Something ‘cold’ and smooth and a bit heartbreaking. something that widens the perspective properly as befits the lyrics.
Need to look at the storm horn section properly. Just an idea at the moment but I do like it. They just need to be a bit more sure of themselves and less apologetic. Nothing worse than an apologetic horn.
Generally ... there is still not enough musical passion in the storm section. It’s not of course helping that the vocals are lack lustre. It is possible that they will need double tracking here maybe.
This DOES work. It really does. I need to believe in it and make it work absolutely convincingly. Courage. Onwards. Go.
Venice in the morning mist via yurayakunin
Because yesterday I got a bit sad so feel the need to tell myself today that such a place a Venice actually exists. Makes my heart a size bigger just looking at it and wondering at it. If I put myself in one of these pictures I feel very happy about me. Maybe I could try to walk each street as if it’s Venice …. that way I will have a good day.
The storm and the grief. Sitting so still and trying to turn an unbearable amount of pain into something I can just about stand. So I light the candle. Contain the grief. Go to sleep; get up; go on.
I miss you my brother.
There is a candle in the first line of the song I was writing when you died. It was there for me. I put it there for me. Selfishly trying to get through my own storms and depression - when you were being all out consumed by yours.
I am leaving the candle there.
It is for love that I leave it there. And, yes, also for guilt. But I try to see love. I try very hard. Some days are easier than others.
The full working version of Polaris. The song now has a piece of poetry at the end of it. I believe it works ... but God knows how I will perform it live ... that will be super hard and emotional. Never mind ... I will not worry about that now as I have work to do.
Will probably do a quick list of things that I need to do to the track to finish it. Still quite a lot but I have a full song now and that is real progress and very hard won.
Meanwhile ... the weather is so beautiful ... going to need to post a lot of moody storm pictures to help me get the atmospherics of this track right.
Time for another cup of tea to go with the list making.
In which I explain what happened to this track. Feels like I have struggled against the odds to work on this. I am not even sure I will be able to finish it. It contains a lot of grief. But it is perhaps good to have containers for grief. Perhaps it will help me carry it a little less heavily somehow.

‘Why the fuck am I doing this?’ - the question that always precedes something worthwhile.
Brian Eno (via tozozozo-x)
Just putting this on my page for the next time I panic. I like the certainty with which he says this. Never argue with Eno.
Dammit she’s captivating. Sara Bareilles’s stunning writing is only exemplified by the beautiful Mueller.
That is how I would like to perform. With that kind of sincerity and passion and experience and screaming talent. With that putting of all ego aside and delivering something that is greater than you are as a performer. That is how it’s done. It is so exciting and inspiring to watch.
