Sketchbook

I was struggling a little bit to find some words during the video but i think it was pretty useful going back into our sketchbook and learn from them.

During this video i show and explain my sketchbook during the past month, I think my sketchbook portrays exactly my journey over the pat weeks that was exploring, learning and geting use to new stuff.

I would have like it to be more lifefull with colors and such but most o the drawings i have are sketches and I'm used to sketch in pencil, I'm looking forward to explore new and more fun ways to sketch and give more life to my sketchbook.

Cheetah Walk Cycle

From our fota trip I recorded a cheetah walking, we were meant to see them eating as aparently there is a show for that, in which we could see them "haunt" their food with a piece of meat in a kind of zipline, to see them run; but we couldn't do it. This is a very rough animation of a "walking cycle".

It's my first time trying to animate an animal. I didn't wanted to Rotoscope it, so this is a completely hand-drawn animation, i feel like Rotoscope is nice for some exercises but i don't want to get used to it, my goal with this small excercise was to train my eye to catch the natural movement. I know there is long way to go but I wanted to post my progress for future reference.

Fota Island Drawing Trip

Our Fota Island trip was really nice, at the begining I was a little overwhelmed by the quantity of animals there it's to see, I sincerely didn't know where to start or how to do it.

I have never done live sketching with animals, it was hard beacuse unlike a model you can't aske them to hold the pose or anything.

What helped get the hang of it was just getting the basic shape of the pose in wanted, see where are the shadowsan lights, so then if the animal moves its fine because I already have the shape i just need some details, so i would study the animal to do the detailed part. This allowed me to not only sketch them but because i would spent some time looking at the animals for the detailes i appreciated theyre movement more.

Character Design

Stop motion - Phonemes and Lipsync

I made this character out of Play Doh, as I couldn't find the clay, I was a little bit worried that i migth not work the same way but it did.

Heavily inspired by the Stop Motion styled of Jamia Caliri in "The Little Prince" I wanted to portray a kid saying hi.

We have been workning on the phonemes of the mouth when talking so it was advised for us to either make the mouth shapes out of clay (separately) or print sticker with the shapes, but because my puppet is pretty small in scale i didn't want to stick big mouths on it and "ruin" the aesthetic that i was looking for.

Soi decided to carve the mouth shapes as i go. This process was undeniably hard, because the play doh was already dryi had to wet some of it first and carefully using a knife carve little by little. Because I was taking bits of the clay to make the mouth bigger as he says the word "Hello", there was no going back when i was carving which made it really stressing.

Thankfully I think it ended up looking quite good, even though i think it couldhave look better, I'm pleased and proud of it. I will keep in mind some of my mistakes during the making of this animation for future reference .

Jamie Caliri - The Little Prince

Mark Osborne is the director of the 2015 animated movie "The Little Prince" He states:

“I said no, there’s no way you can make a big CG-animated movie out of this book,” Mr. Osborne said during an interview. “It’s so delicate and poetic.”

Even tho this movie is a combination between CG animation, Cutout animation and Stop Motion, the last two are the ones that, in my opinion, give this movie the poetic and artistic sense of the story.

Jamie Caliri is a well know animator in the industry, his work in "traditional" animations have gained them plenty of recognitions. He was the stop motion Creative Director for this movie.

Osborne stated, “I wanted to feel like the Little Girl was just learning to use her imagination, starting from a piece of paper(...), Jamie came up with this idea of transitioning slowly so that we’re getting more dimensional using the flat cutouts. Sand dunes and other set pieces are all depicted with flat paper until the moment the Little Prince comes onscreen. The story then moves to full dimensional puppet stop-motion."

I think that the way of using stop motion like its used in this movies has more meaning than it ust being another type of animation, it separates worlds, points of views and aesthetics that can all add vlue to the movie.

I personally like thi delicacy of the stylization of the little prince on the stop motion part, i think it gives it this whimsical, genuine and innocent take on it.

Animal sketching

3 minute sketches using the Animal sketching tool of Line of Action.

The class is going to Fota Island to do live animal sketching. So I have been tring to prepare for that.

I have some issues on doing quick sketches and not worrying to much about the details, so i found this website called Line of Action it is an space in which not only there are short videos on how to draw certain stuff but also tools for artist to practice.

I usually use the Figure drawing tools, in which you can pick what kind of photos do you want to be shown depending on nude models or not, female or male models or both, etc.

But there is also an Animal sketching too within the app. In which you can choose what kind of anials do you want to sketch, etc. So It works in a class mode, you get to choose how long do u want the picture to show and then it changes.

I think it is a pretty good drawing excersice

Hello :)

When a character talks in an animation, the shape of their mouth matches the pre-recorded audio, these shapes are Phonemes.

Each sound that the mouth make has a sahpe, so putting all those sahpes together is how a dialogue is created.

We were askes to make a 3D model of a character saying "Hello". But first i wanted to get used to using phonemes and seeing how the mouth naturally moves in order to form words.

I recorded an small video of myself saying "Hello" and later on using Photoshop and Rotoscope I could trace the phonemes. I then identified the key phonemes (h.) (e.) (l.) (o.) (u.) and the rest were in between frames.

Walk Cycle

Yvonne walked us through the "Walk cycles" we went to the park and reflected on our own particular way of walking and others. She also showed us some videos of how to achieve a good walk cycle.

The main stages of a walking cycle are four: Contact, Down, Passing and Up, of course there are in between frames but these are the general ones.

Time-lapse project (sound on):

This week we worked on making a time-lapse of a picture we liked, I took this picture on a trip to Galway.

I edited it using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere, we reflected on being selective what do we take away when making an animation and the sequence to follow. It is a frame by frame animation so the process was a little bit long but I really enjoyed making it and adding the music. I am really satisfied with how it turned out.

The pixilation challege was in larger groups, it was a little bit harder to work because there was a lot of ideas and trying to show the rest of the group what is your vision for an specific shot was a little bit tricky.

We found that using references of camera work from movies or tv shown worked best for us, so we could have a kind of example what the other person had in mind. Even though all of the group member are editing the same pixilation, our editing approaches on each is very different.

Today we learned how to use a guide and orient path in Adobe Animate.
