once we had concept and an inspiration source figured out, we moved on to developing ideas for the clothing as part of building a collection.
this is a selection of some designs i was exploring to be able to build up a collection and a design for the skirt we are making as part of this 6 week project.
next we were tackling colour boards.
i struggled to get good sources of colour that linked to the topics i was exploring in the collection for a long time.
i began with japanese woodblock prints which made no sense. i then found similar colour sources as the woodblock prints in styling elements of the people around me such as headbands and bracelets. reanalyzing my mindmaps, i then looked more into existing examples of documentation of people's everyday styling, such as the social media accounts of @lsadfits and @outfitsofncad on instagram, as well as the people of new york accounts.
settling upon pictures from the social media accounts of @lsadfits and @outfitsofncad as my source of colour, i searched through and found the most commonly featured colours which would work for colour sourcing. then in looking for fabrics that worked and matched the sourced colours, i altered the colour board to better reflect and compliment my inspiration and concept boards.
our first task was to develop a concept board taking inspiration from different areas we had looked at.
i used primary research of college students and their clothing i encountered throughout the week, different collections that explored silhouettes and styling that i am taking inspiration from, a book called "jocks and nerds" and tracings/drawings of shapes on the body that were the beginning of my exploration of shape for the collection.
fashion - 6 week skirt project
we began this project by choosing a topic and exploring through mindmaps where we could source our inspiration from.
i chose to look into the topics "a life of athletic leisure" and "portrait" focusing on the everyday college student and their dressing.

another example of playing around with the possibilities of the alternate forms using the inflated plastic bags that developed while dismantling the main structure.
experimenting and playing around with the way the bags move and float was fun and interesting to see the effects of.
after the assessment, i had to take apart the structures and deflate each bag. some friends volunteered to help me out with this task and while we were dismantling the structure we were playing around and found new ways of approaching the use of these bags.
keeping the bags attached partially to each other, we created chains and different formations that allowed for interesting movement.
here is one example of the types of movements we were able to create while playing around with the forms ability.
this was the final model of the room structure made from the inflated plastic bags. the structure was created by tying the tie-handles of the bags to each other to create a connection and support each bag.
i was not able to complete the structure to the original design and concept due to time restrictions and lack of materials, but for the 2 week elective, i was pleased i was able to make a prototype of what could be carried forward for another project.
i got the chance to make use of the seminar dark room to conduct a photo shoot during the sculpture elective. i brought in the inflated plastic bags to attempt to simulate an environment, a feeling, or a mass.
i used and experimented with different lighting effects, configurations of structure, props, and conceptual ideas.
i really enjoyed getting the chance to do this photoshoot and explore the idea of physical sculptures versus pure visualisation of sculpture through photography.
the final, constructed tipi/teepee.
i had planned to try out experimenting with injecting the bubble wrap with ink or water based paint at the top and diffuse the colour out down the teepee but the simplistic more white/iridescence is more visually stimulating, in my opinion.
the plain bubble wrap also adds a nice effect with a person inside it when it is transparent.

during the run of this sculpture elective, Aideen Barry ran a video projection mapping workshop.
we started by mapping our stop motion animation onto boxes but then brought in the objects we were working with in sculpture to project on.
after playing with and getting used to the projection program, we were given the task to project an area of the room so we were assigned the back wall and below is the projection we ended up with.
continuing to just mess about and work on a couple different projects, i wanted to revisit the idea of the room i tried to build using plastic bags in the church gallery. i needed many more plastic bags so i just started inflating them using a bike pump.
developing on my concept and ideas, i wanted to make a structure incorporating bubble wrap.
i made a tipi using bamboo sticks as the base structure. i solidified the structure by tying the bamboo together using wire and covering it with a plastic bag to keep a connection between the works.
making the bubble wrap walls was very simple, i just laid the structure down on the bubble wrap and drew around the shape.
i plan to stitch the walls to the bamboo base and add a layered bubble wrap floor.
a 4th year sculpture student was running a plastic workshop which i took part in. for this workshop, she had collected plastic found from the beach and asked the participants to make structures by attaching different plastic pieces to each other.
below are the sculptures which i made during the workshop. my goal was to reflect the concept behind her project, as well as capture some of the effect the plastic discarded in the ocean has on animals in the water.
the sculptures made during the workshop were put on display down by the sculpture department by the 4th year and by the tutors from the department.
i decided to try and expand my experiments and structures so I moved to the church gallery for a test run of a structure idea.
i wanted to lay out the bags in the base shape of a room and play around with size/scale and dimensions that the room could be. in order to be effective, i planned for the room to be 10ft×8ft in base and about 5ft3" tall on the inside.
trying to see if I could reduce the amount of bags i would require, i tried changing the size down to 8ft×5ft in base and 5ft high. i tried out a few other sizes, however, in the end i decide the smaller scale wouldn't work because the room wasn't as effective.

i went back to stop motion to play around with the glass cases. adding and removing the bags to create a story or a moment.
i found these display cases in the college and was very interested in them because i felt it was a good way to combine both of the driving interests from the objects i looked at. i also think that the case can have many readings and meanings through which could develop a new side to this project during the elective.
i began to fill the glass tank with the different plastic bags i had. each time trying to alter the composition.
i experimented with this for a few days and with each of the different plastic bags i thought of featuring differently.
