Ouran High School Host Club Vol 8

I was thinking again about the episode of Ouran, “And So Kyouya Met Him” and specifically about the scene pictured above. There are many moments in Ouran that I consider to be incredible works of art but this particular moment moved me to tears as I was thinking about it and I’ll tell you why. This episode, the last flashback episode before the grand finale (and perhaps the most important flashback of all), shows both the start of Tamaki and Kyouya’s relationship and the beginnings of the host club itself.  We are introduced to Kyouya Outori, two years previous to the current Ouran affairs. Kyouya’s home is modern and western in design, drab and simple. He eats a meal with his father and two brothers at a table that is the lone object in an enormous, dark room. His brothers are removed and are like strangers to Kyouya. His father spends a short time stressing the importance of remaining distant and wise in order to achieve success. It is clear that Kyouya’s physical surroundings are as empty, dark, and cold as his relationship with his family. Then Kyouya meets Tamaki Suoh who tells his new friend that he thinks owning a kotatsu (a small, low table with a blanket and heater) equals having a happy family. The kotatsu symbolizes the warmth and togetherness that Kyouya and Tamaki’s family situations lack. Both are separated from the nurturing tenderness of their mothers and are stuck in situations in which they are constantly reminded of their inadequacies (Kyouya’s inability to become the family patriarch due to being the third son and Tamaki’s rejection from the main family due to his birth status). Tamaki, in true heroine nature, helps Kyouya realize that he is not the cold, calculating stoic his father would have him be, that instead of being aloof and carefully guarded, he is actually full of passion and that “success” is what you make it. Tamaki holds out his hand in not only genuine friendship but with intentions of creating a bond not unlike the loving family neither have known. So when Tamaki and Kyouya sit together under a kotatsu, sharing tea and laughing, I get a little emotional thinking about what they are saving themselves from. Because when Tamaki suggests the host club, he is suggesting that they open their hearts to more lost souls in need of a “kotatsu,” that they welcome them to their new family.

“Tachibana, it’s me. There’s been a breach in our security.”

Kyoya *runs a hand lovingly across Tamaki’s face*: You’re pretty fucking annoying is what you are.
