Had a pretty pelted dog come through my hands yesterday. I got super busy and didn't get after shots but here are some before. As you can see, he was so matted his hair came off as one big piece of pelt. It always makes me sad to see pets come in like this, especially with pet parents that aren't remorseful. A matted pet is an unhealthy, unhappy pet.
My mom's first attempt at grooming her Yorkie, Jack. She's gotten much better and he is even cuter! ✂️🐾❤️☺️
Yes, I was having fun. Why do you ask? (Source: http://ift.tt/2ozuEAw)
Some over grown nails I trimmed today at work. Pet Parents! All pets, dogs, cats, reptiles, rodents etc need regular nail trimming. Your dog needs its nails trimmed at least once a month for general maintenance. If you can hear your dog’s nails click on the floor, they are too long! Over grown nails can cause major discomfort, joint pain and even deform your pets paws. It is critical to your pets health!
Not always, my dog has very flat feet so even when they were at their shortest they still clicked. But yes, they still need trimming and dremeling can be very useful.
@friskybits, Actually, your dogs nails are still too long. See, dogs have a vein inside their nails called a quick, much like the pink part of a human nail. However, in humans this pink part does not grow or recede at all. On dogs, however the quicks grow and change in length depending on how long the nail is allowed to grow. With frequent dremeling, you can actually shorten quicks over time so that the nail can be trimmed shorter without hurting the dog. This takes a lot of effort though, and most pet parents never see the rewards. In your situation, your dogs nails grew out the quick, meaning you trimmed them as short as possible without harming him but the nail in general was still too long. Just because nails are trimmed to the quick doesn’t mean they are as short as they need to be. If your dogs nails click when they walk, it is putting pressure on the toes from the ground, meaning discomfort for your dog.
I am very much aware thanks, flat paws versus round ones may always click, it’s just how the shape works, take this for example.
A sighthounds poots are engineered to have grip to allow for faster running, these claws will always click because they need to grasp.
Whereas a more rounded foot like this is higher off the ground because they’re not needed for running.
My dog’s nails have been dremelled for years now and they’re not getting any shorter, he’s a saluki cross and has the webbed and gripping shape of a saluki therefore his feet will always click.
Here’s another example within the same breed, the set of nail will determine if they click. The ones closest always click despite being shorter than the ones in the back because the nails are set further down.
I mean no offense, friskybits. Regardless of breed or paw style or how the nails sit, if the nails are touching the ground, it causes discomfort. For you, it maybe something that can't be helped. But for most pet parents it can be helped and it is simply neglectful behavior that makes their dog's nails click. You are correct these nails are very short and well taken care of, but that doesn't change the fact that they are having pressure from the floor and that causes discomfort for the dog. It may not be something you can fix as easily as other pet parents, or at all.

My dog, Midget, freshly groomed. Isn't she cute? ✂️🐾❤️
PLEASE make sure to regularly check your pet’s toenails! This dog’s owner had not realized that the dewclaw was curling around and growing into the paw pad. It embedded a full centimeter into the pad, causing an abscess and severe pain in the area. It would have taken weeks to get to that point. Antibiotics and pain medication are the mainstays of therapy.
Nail trims are especially important in any dog with dewclaws, cats with extra toes, and senior pets whose nails do not get worn down as quickly anymore. I see this problem most often in ancient cats.
A request of mine, the mini American Eskimo, Yosh! ❤🐾✂

I've heard really great things about flexible slicker brushes so I finally decided to try one myself! It'll be here Monday! ❤🐾✂
My new straights are coming on Monday! Kazu 5.5" rounded tips. My current shears are 7.5" so I’m so happy to have a pair that will fit my tiny hands just a bit more appropriately! 😍☺🐾❤✂
