The silksong brainworms are coming back (with better designs now)
It’s pretty cool how Silksong doesn’t require the player to have any Hollow Knight knowledge for Acts 1 & 2. Obviously the game is tuned for players already familiar with Hollow Knight’s difficulty, and knowing the lore adds depth to Hornet’s actions and to the world, but there aren’t any plot points where you’d be lost if this is your first game of the two. You can reach credits and enjoy a strong, if vague story.
Until Act 3. I suppose Team Cherry made the quite reasonable assumption that anyone who got this far had played HK, and just immediately tossed you in the deep end lore-wise. Before you even finish the cutscene, you’re hit with the void (which expects knowledge of Dream No More) which is followed by the Snail Shamans (general HK familiarity) and then the Delicate Flower (Embrace the Void flower version specifically) and then all of the Red Memory Hornet lore (picked through Midwife and White Lady’s dialogue and put all the pieces together), followed by the ending (also Embrace the Void). And all of this is just put in so casually, with absolutely no explanation. Of course we all know about the bloom that repels the dark, we all saw the secret ending cutscene after Hollow Knight’s hardest gauntlet! To be fair, everyone who I’ve seen play it had the expected level of lore familiarity so it definitely worked, but it’s funny.
