these shots are definitely not real by any means, they are 100% images he’s conjuring in his own brain, same with the shots of photos and drawings he has of her, barley any scenes from the panic attack are FROM his relationship with her. to me, he’s trying to use these fake thoughts of claire to calm him down, and it isn’t working.

which is why when he finally does find something that calms him down, they are real scenes. we see syd enter his life, and when she leaves, we see her walk back into it. something notable is that these scenes, the way they are shot, could be perceived as from HIS perspective. as if carmy is looking at her. these moments he actually has with her is what brings him down.
