jack and katherine break up like a month after the strike (because, seriously, they are Not good for each other) and jack has nothing tying him down anymore. he’s entirely too old to be a newsie, he’s longing for change, and his girlfriend just left him, so obviously the only thing to do is use all of his savings to buy a train ticket to santa fe.

and THEN think about how once he gets there he just needs a break to start new and be the cowboy he always wanted to be, so he stops sending letters back. AND ON TOP OF THAT think about how because of that half of the newsies think he’s dead, the other half think he hates them, and crutchie (HIS ADOPTIVE BROTHER) is so angry at everyone. angry at the newsies for doubting jack, angry at jack for leaving them, and angry at himself for not going with jack when he offered so long ago.

consider race winning an enormous sum of money in a risky gamble (like. multiple hundreds) and getting lots of important people pissed, so he needs to leave New York. he has this half assed plan to head to santa fe and find jack, maybe get one of those fancy plots of land they give to the settlers for dirt cheap, start a ranch.

now consider: race and crutchie grew up together in the lodging with jack. they’ve always been close to jack, but not to each other. race doesn’t wanna leave alone, he’s a social guy and needs someone to watch his back. so he asks crutchie to go with him. and crutchie says yes.

queue like two months of travel and rootin tootin cowboy shenanigans

i finally wrote the first chapter of the fic based on it. it's on my ao3 linked in this post. it is crutchtrack!! i will spread my agenda everywhere i go >:)
