Again, I'd love to see a Wizards of Once movie. I'd love to see an opening narration that introduces the Darkwood and how wild and dangerous it is ("more dangerous than the Warriors?" "Oh, please, this place eats warriors for breakfast.") and how even the prettiest looking flower could be hiding a nasty secret. As the narrator says that last remark, the screen focuses on a very pretty but suspiciously jaw-shaped flower (with an X the color of witchblood displayed prominently on the petals because I like my foreshadowing to be extremely on the nose), and a bumbling, fuzzy little... flying creature buzzing on top of it to admire it. Xar swings in from offscreen and catches the baby sprite just as the petal-jaws start closing around it. Xar is revealed to be the narrator when he says "...But you don't have to be afraid of any of that! Because I'm the leader, and I, Xar son of Encanzo, can protect you from anything!"

If you haven't heard, the em dash has been getting a lot of attention latelyâŚ
Because it was trained on pirated workâincluding freely accessible online writing (like fanfic, academic texts)âChatGPT picked up patterns and quirks native to human writing.
Including (sigh) the em dash.
There are other victims here (RIP tapestry and delve đŤ ), but the appropriation of the em dashâa punctuation mark beloved by writers everywhereâfeels especially personal.
A kind of low-grade panic is ensuing. Writers who once memed their own em dash overuseâthe greatest punctuation mark ever to grace the control-freakâs lexicon, franklyâare suddenly backing away to avoid accusations.
No. More. We have centuries of dash-abusing writers behind us. We will not sit quietly while AI repurposes our beloved stilted asideâor the just-one-more clarification the sentence demandsâor the dramatic pause your comma could neverâetc.
You donât write like AIâAI writes like you.
Defend the em dash.

do y'all ever think about what happened after the third movie.
i dont, often, because i dont like the third movie. ive only watched it once, so i could be wrong about some things, but i was just thinking today about how things would've gone on in the days and weeks and years after.
mostly, about hiccup, because all i ever think about these days are hiccup and toothless. i was thinking about how, for a large part of his life, everything about hiccup has revolved around toothless and dragons. how it was, really, the first thing he'd ever done that got more than a glance from someone else. more than a "get back inside before you mess everything up more" from his father, from anyone.
expanding because i can't leave well enough alone:Â
how do we think hiccup did, as chief of berk, as a person, as hiccup without toothless? without the dragons? How did his sense of self suffer, his worth, in his own eyes?
he is described as heart of a chief, soul of a dragon. how do you function as half of what you are? can you have heart without soul? hiccup has found comfort and belonging with toothless, with dragons, from so early on in the first movie. does he know how to be a leader without them? without him?Â
Me when Ai starts writing fiction probably
To a lesser extent maybe
Idk
Are Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus nest parasites?
Toothless talks about his mother teaching him things but never mentions that she is really huge. Teaching survival skills to a tiny infant is hard when you are orders of magnitude bigger. Are Seadragons common/garden mimics that switch an egg out for their own? Or do Seadragon babies provide some kind of benefit for raising them? (Like geriatric care, idk.) I kind of doubt a dragon could be "tricked" into believing the egg is their own, they're much more intelligent than say... warblers.
"Are you sure about this, Rob? Jimmy isn't as... precocial as the others..."
"Trust me, Loretta, he may be a handful now, but the retirement benefits pay off."
Later...
"Jimmy. Always remember: dragons are never ever grateful. Except to their parents. They care for them in their old age. Don't forget."
Or maybe Common/Gardens are like geese who love being parents and collecting children and having an army of children is a status symbol.
However, there's also this theory about Canada geese
"Where goose populations are dense, we often see âgang broodingâ. This may be cooperative: a form of goosey day care, to make foraging easier and safer for the parents. However, there is some evidence that itâs actually a hostile takeover by a dominant pair of geese. They may be actively stealing other parentsâ babies, in an effort to âpadâ their own brood. Their natural babies stay closer to the parents, and when a predator comes along, theyâre more likely to take the foster goslings. Ainât nature grand?"
source
So idk.
It's also possible that Seadragons will leave their eggs near a common nesting ground (the caves in the Wild Dragon Cliffs seem to be popular with other dragons, because there are many youngsters of different species in book 1) and then the hatchling will just latch onto the nearest Common-or-Garden as a mother (possibly Common-or-Gardens themselves are communal nesters anyway)
or possibly Dragonese doesn't distinguish between egg-mother and hatchling-mother / teacher of early life lessons, and Toothless was part of a group that got the same lesson (Toothless was surprised by the revelation that he is a Seadragon, so it's probably safe to assume he didn't actually meet his egg-mother)
I am absolutely lapping this discussion up bc ultimately we don't get to see much of what a nest environment even looks like in the books. When they all go to pick their dragons there do mostly seem to be divisions along species lines within the caves, but the fact remains that there are several species all effectively cohabitating regardless. Beyond that one scene though, I can't recall any other time we see dragons with their young - and certainly not ones still in their eggs - so all we really have is Toothless' sporadic commentary on the subject and a whole lot of delicious delicious headcanon!
The other important element is that by all evidence Toothless is quite identical to a Common-or-Garden and remains so until well past the age he'd still be relying on a parent for support, even if he was still living in the same nest with them. (Which brings up a whole other discussion on how dragon family structures work, if dragons mate for life/have monogamous relationships, and how vikings periodically stealing their young impacts that but we're here to talk about something else right now!) All the other dragons believe Toothless is Common-or-Garden (or equally plain) and even with the whole Toothless Daydream thing no one really thought he was anything special species-wise.
All that said, I think there are a few main ways to slot a Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus into a dragon nest and account for Toothless' statements/knowledge:
Eggs get left on the beach - I'm picturing like how sea turtles do it - and Common-or-Garden's assume it's one of their own and raise it communally in the nest with no questions. I'll grant that there might be debate over who's child in particular it is bc dragons are, as noted above, not stupid, but that wouldn't supercede the fact that it's 'clearly' a Common-or-Garden. This would also be supported if Prev is correct and Common-or-Garden dragons just are a communal species anyway.
Seadragons do the Fae child swap thing and dragons like Toothless are some sort of dragon equivalent to a changeling. With dragons being so selfish you'd think they'd just toss a false child, but I think OP is onto something with the retirement plan and I could totally see standard dragons developing something of a mythos around Seadragons. In that case you'd want to keep/raise your swapped kid in the hopes you'd have a powerful ally in the future (not to mention the clout - you know dragons love bragging).
Seadragon eggs (or possibly recently hatched young) are left on the beach and kinda just fend for themselves. Idk enough of the animal kingdom to know if there's a real-world equivalent that would make sense, but I'm basically imagining young Seadragons as sort of lone scavengers. Based on Toothless and The Wodensfang they are quite small - even scrawny - when they aren't in the prime of their life. I could see them being basically a nuisance to other dragons but not actually worth killing outright, and therefore able to eke out their survival and sort of exist in the edges of a nest community. Toothless is quite far from the main area of the caves when Hiccup finds him, and certainly much closer to danger that near to the enterance than the others.
Per Prev, all dragons leave their eggs in one fashion or another and don't directly engage with their development until after they've hatched, so for the first bit of any dragon's life they are just in a communal hodgepodge nest. In this case, you just have to assume all dragon adults don't distinguish based on specific parentage and instead solely on species (could be very fun considering all of Fireworm's boasting about lineage) which would allow Seadragons to blend in with the Common-or-Garden, or that dragon adults expect a great deal of independence from their young so the specific child doesn't need to really latch on to any one adult in the first place in order to survive in an interspecies nest.
Maybe dragons are dumb and eggs get swapped all the time ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ so who would notice one extra egg that no one remembers laying (kinda boring I know but you gotta get all the options on the table) you just raise the one(s) that look vaguely like you and move on with your life. Even if none of the adults explicitly adopted the Seadragon, that kind of environment would mitigate some of the dangers of just surviving alone.
It's a bit dark, but perhaps a Seadragon brood (litter?) is actually a dozen eggs but only 1 or 2 ever survive precisely bc they have to fend for themselves without a dedicated parent to raise them and to learn from and just have to make do with scraps of both from other dragons. We don't have a lot of info about how large the Seadragon population is/should be in the first place so it's definitely a possibility. We also know Seadragons will kill each other with relatively little provocation, so it isn't hard to imagine that might extend to their young as well.
Itâs also possible that this was to an extent a one sided relationship.
Like an adult dragon spoke to toothless like three times and he was like âyes this is my mother nowâ.
It does seem even among the wild dragon cliff dragons who donât seem to care very much when their hatchlings get kidnapped, toothless is pretty isolated and sleeps alone et cetera, so I get the feeling he doesnât really have a standard dragon family.
But at the same time toothless attaches strongly to hiccup fast - and he seems to see it much more like âyou are my weird older brother and I indulge your weird human customsâ rather than âI listen to you because you give me foodâ.
Which is partially because of how Hiccup treats him but I do wonder if maybe toothless just does this.
so sad. so sad they're confirmed monogamous

Rephrase.
"I don't like any of these extremists on the right or the left! I just think we need the basic common sense middle ground stuff. Like, the government ought to be providing everyone healthcare, that's just basic. Every other developed country in the world can do it, why not us? We're Americans, we're supposed to be world leaders. And why are we letting rich people accumulate so much money they can buy our entire government? We need sensible tax rates like we had in the 1950's. We don't need the government interfering in family medical decisions or what gender people want to be, talk about your activist governments! What's next, they wanna micromanage us like they did in the 1800's? Send women to jail for wearing pants? Come on, let trans people go to the goddamn bathroom, what's wrong with people? And I don't understand why we need a freaking secret police force to terrorize people whose visas expired. Why don't we just let anyone immigrate and get a green card if they can pass a background check, that way they get paid minimum wages like Americans do and corporations can't pay them super cheaply to get out of fair wages? It'd be better for all Americans that way. You wanna enforce customs at the border, sure, we don't want smuggling, but the way ICE currently is, half the people who work there get a hardon when they think about terrorizing immigrants. In my opinion the whole department's gotta go and we go back to the way things used to be. "
Like... you use the short version of those opinions, people have been taught "these are extreme opinions!" But you express the exact same information a different way and people go, yeah, that makes perfect sense. Kind of like "defund the police" is scary but if you say, "let's take some of the funds we're currently allocating to the police, and give them to specialists who're good at dealing with mentally ill and desperate people, so those people get the right kind of help and don't get shot. You know, if all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail... and the police have guns, so every problem looks like a thing to shoot. Let's keep them targeted on what they're good at and give the work you don't need a gun for to people who don't need a gun to do it," people think that's perfectly reasonable. "Fund non-violent alternatives to police for non-violent issues like welfare checks" is another way you can phrase it, which is shorter.
Well fuck.
